Exhausted beyond measure, Alla had no energy left for aimless pondering. She took a soothing bath and retreated to her room for sleep. She slept heavily until the following afternoon, close to three o'clock. Her propensity for sleep seemed to be intensifying.

She was aware that those in the advanced stages of her condition would face an escalation of symptoms, but she chose not to dwell on it. For her, it was a matter of enduring as long as she could.
