Vera's wide eyes told Neven that she still didn't believe him. Or that she was waiting for the trap.
Since letting her think by herself was making him angry, he had stepped closer and pinned her chin to force her to look him in the eye. But then, the situation hadn't gotten any better.
Vera just thought he wanted to play some weird game. And he had no clue how to convince her that - even though he had a hidden agenda and was planning to get married to her, even though he did want something more than her to work for him - he was harmless.
Maybe, he realised, getting closer and clingy was not the right strategy.
He took a step back and stood there, helpless. There was something wrong with all of that. With the way she couldn't believe he didn't want anything - not even for a second - nor that he could like her just because. To her, he wanted to play or hurt her without any apparent reason.
