Chapter 48: More servants

After the people dispersed, deeply unsettled by Emma and Duke's methods, I found myself compelled to deliver a stern reprimand. While I didn't object to their efforts in rallying individuals to stand against the vampires, their choice of language troubled me greatly. Words like 'our lord' implied a reverence towards me as if I were some omnipotent deity capable of solving all of humanity's woes. Such rhetoric only served to exacerbate my aversion to anything divine, a sentiment rooted in my past experiences. What, I pondered bitterly, had this so-called God ever done for me? How can anyone truly grow if they perpetually lean on spiritual pillars? Where was this God when people were starving, succumbing to uncontrollable circumstances? These questions lingered, making my reprimand of the two quite harash.

Despite my initial anger, I couldn't hold it against them for long, especially when they explained their actions as a sudden surge of emotion and an urgent desire to garner support for me. While this explanation left me somewhat unsettled, I chose to simply instruct the two to retire for the night, a command I followed myself by retreating into my meticulously organized mindscape. Over the years, I had meticulously structured this mental library , allowing me to access memories from both my past and current lives, so with not much to do inside I spent time playing old games from my old world until the break of dawn.

'The first thing I need to know is what happened before my return,' I pressed, as Emma and Duke approached the fire where I tended to a large pot of soup, intended to provide sustenance for the soon-to-arrive children.

"Sir," Emma began solemnly, "there was a significant attack by 10 vampires on the settlement while Duke and I were out shopping. We noticed the dwindling food supplies and decided to go get some more thanks to this we were there and sprung into action. Thankfully, we managed to take down 4 of them swiftly, dispatching them before they could cause further harm. However, the remaining 6 vampires wreaked havoc, claiming the lives of dozens of innocent people before we could intervene."

'How did you even manage to capture and kill so many vampires? I know you're both slightly weaker than the average vampire,' I queried, causing Duke to step forward. With a wave of his hands, he conjured a trident of ice, a much to my shock of his abilities, but my shock was not to end there. Meanwhile, Emma continued speaking, summoning icicles with a flick of her hands, one of which shot forth and embedded itself into the ground not far away.

"We used the magic we received from you sir" Thats all Emma said as I asked them what other things they could do and it was pretty much what they showed me as they couldn't do anything else but I had a feeling I could teach them the spells I know and to test it I wrote up papers with the formula for each spell and told them to study it while I went out.

"Where are you going sir?" Emma asked to which I simply explained I was going bandit hunting as I wanted to see the limits of [chilled servitude] as I wanted to aquire more servants like Duke and Emma.
