I Need To Stand On My Own

"I can't always depend on Gabby; she has a life too. I need to stand up and be strong now and for the future," Helena muttered. She had just dried her tears from crying her eyes out. Right after, she said goodbye to Arthur. She knew she needed to say those words even though letting Arthur go felt so wrong in her heart.

Helena took a different route in healing; instead of talking to Gabby, she had an online session with her therapist, Dr. Benson.

"Hello, Helena. It's good to see you again, even through a virtual session. How have you been since our last meeting?"

"Hi, Dr. Benson. I've been doing my best. It's been a challenging week, but I'm grateful for the opportunity to connect with you, even if it's online. I apologize for not being able to come to your office."

"No need to apologize, Helena. We've talked about this. I understand that circumstances can make it difficult to attend in-person sessions. I'm glad we can still have this virtual meeting to continue our work together. So, tell me, how have things been progressing since our last session?"

"Well, I've been working on letting go of the past and focusing on healing. I've been practicing self-reflection and changing my mindset when comparing Arthur and Israel. It's still a work in progress, but I'm determined to move forward."

"That's wonderful to hear, Helena. Your actively self-reflecting and challenging your thought patterns is a significant step forward. Remember, healing is a journey, and it takes time and patience. How has your relationship with Arthur been since our last session?"

"That's why I want us to have this therapy session. I just talked to Arthur and asked him to end everything between us. I said we were not fitted for each other," Helena said, her voice brittle. "We are from different worlds. I don't know how to say it, Dr. Benson," she paused.

"Don't force yourself, Helena. I know this is hard for you. But is that really what you want now?"

"I'm not sure, honestly," she admitted. "But someone said it would be best to leave Arthur instead of ruining his life like I did to Israel, and I realized she was right. Besides, Arthur has big responsibilities for his family, especially his siblings. I can't be another baggage for him." Helena broke into tears.

Dr. Benson already knows Helena's history with Israel and Arthur. The first time Helena visited her office, she told the history of what she was going through for Dr. Benson to understand where she was coming from.

"Helena, you need time on this and make sure when you decide it is what you really want and not because some people like you to do it and manipulate you to do certain things. This person is telling you to end your relationship with Arthur, who is this person to you?" Dr. Benson asked calmly.

Helena knew what Lauren was doing to her, but she still considered Arthur more suitable with Pamela. Realistically, both people from wealthy families are meant to be together. "Lauren, Israel's mother. Now, I know she only wants to hurt me as she wants to take revenge for what happened to her son, but still, I thought it was the best way to end things. I don't want Arthur to suffer anymore," Helena wiped her tears.

This is not unusual for Dr. Benson's patient, and she's used to it. "This is, instead, a complicated situation. And I understand your point of not hurting the love of your life, but Helena, you can't decide on Arthur's behalf. Half of you talked to him clearly about why you want to end things between the two of you."

Dr. Benson patiently waits for Helena's answer. When Helena found the strength to talk, she broke into tears again. "No. I only wanted to end all this pain and hopefully start a new life. But honestly, I regretted doing it. I still love him so much, and there's part of me hoping he'll return, take me in his arms, and never let me go. But I know it's impossible given his situation now with his siblings."

It was a devastating situation, but Dr. Benson was used to it, and she could only give her patient helpful advice to amend her patient's wound and pain. "Helena, you need time to think, but I recommend you continue doing activities that help you calm down and think clearly."

"Yes, I've been exploring different self-care practices. My novel has helped me to express my emotions and gain clarity. I've also been engaging in mindfulness exercises and short walks on the shore, and I plan on taking regular long walks in nature to clear my mind. It's helped find moments of peace and grounding."

"That's excellent, Helena. Self-care is essential for your emotional well-being. It's wonderful to hear you're exploring various activities that bring you comfort and tranquility. Remember to be consistent with these practices and to be kind to yourself throughout this process."

"Thank you, Dr. Benson. Your guidance has been invaluable during this challenging time," Helena wiped her tears. "I'm determined to keep pushing forward and find happiness within myself and my relationships with people around me, even without Arthur," Helena said with a bitter taste in her mouth.

"You're doing fantastic, Helena. I'm proud of your commitment to your growth and healing. Remember, I'm here to support you every step of the way, whether in person or through our virtual sessions. Together, we will continue to work on embracing the present and building a brighter future for ourselves."

"Thank you, Dr. Benson; this session helped me release all the thoughts I've been suppressing. I feel like I can breathe freely now."

The session ended early, so Helena took long walks in the forest. She went to the town the next day, hoping to connect with new people. She was determined to make the most of her transition to her new life.

Helena also began to explore the small town and all its offerings. She visited the local library and museums and went to the farmer's market to pick up fresh produce. She went to movies, attended theater performances, and checked out the local art galleries. She even participated in a beginner's painting class at a nearby art studio.

Helena continued caring for her mental health and trying to connect with new people. Slowly but surely, she began to feel more at home in San Antonio. She was still a little lonely at times but also learning how to cope and find joy in her new life.

Helena was thankful for the support of her friend Gabby. Without her, she may not have had the courage to talk to a therapist and start her new life. But now that Gabby was gone, Helena was determined to take care of herself and make the most of this unique opportunity. She was slowly finding her place in San Antonio and feeling more at home each day.

Helena stood by the window of her beach house, staring out at the endless expanse of the ocean as if it could provide her with answers. Her heart felt heavy, constricted by shadows of doubt and fear. The salty breeze ruffled her hair, a meager comfort amidst the turmoil.

A sudden knock on the door startled her, and she hesitated momentarily before opening it to find Arthur standing there, his blue eyes filled with determination and love. He had left his family and obligations behind, driven by an unyielding need to assure Helena of his devotion.

"Arthur," she breathed, unable to hide the surprise in her voice. "What are you doing here?"
