Chapter 2 Testing

Entering the building, Jasper discovered an open testing room awaiting him. The room was adorned with an assortment of weapons, showcasing the diverse styles practiced within the Martial Hall. The floor, made of a special hardened stone, boasted exceptional durability and resistance to damage. Five circles marked the floor, serving as designated sparring fields. In addition to testing, these rooms also doubled as training and sparring grounds for the instructors. Given the Martial Hall's financial limitations, the versatility of the rooms was necessary to maximize resource usage.

Taking his place in the center of the middle circle, Jasper assumed a meditative posture, delving deep within himself to manipulate his aura and practice various aura pathways. He immersed himself in this practice until an elder, donning the distinctive uniform of an elder and around 50 years of age, entered the room.

"Young Master Jasper," the elder addressed him, his tone conveying a sense of wisdom, authority, but respect at the same time, "Flay informed me that you wish to undertake the 6th stage test. Is that correct?"

Rising to his feet and bowing respectfully to Elder Han, Jasper declared, "Yes, Elder Han, I am prepared to take the test."

It was worth noting that both Instructor Han and Elder Han hailed from the Han clan in Valley Village, located north of the Spring Village. While the Spring Martial Hall was under the ownership of the Spring Village, neighboring villages also sent their children to train there. The representatives from the Han clan had been dispatched to the Spring Martial Hall not only to fulfill their duties but also to safeguard and manage the interests of their own clan. The Spring Village permitted external clans to work within the Martial Hall due to its remarkable growth, a pace that the village alone couldn't keep up with. Therefore, additional manpower was necessary to maintain control over the Martial Hall.

Observing Jasper standing in the middle circle, Elder Han nodded approvingly. "It appears that you have prepared yourself for the test. In that case, let us commence immediately. I will restrict my strength to that of the 6th stage of pre practitioner. Your task is to engage in combat with me within the circle for a duration of 15 minutes."

Upon hearing this, Jasper retrieved a wooden sword from the wall and assumed a ready fighting stance. "Yes, Elder, I am prepared!"

Acknowledging Jasper's readiness, Elder Han stepped into the circle, prepared to begin the test.

Indeed, as the son of the Spring Village Chief and the designated young master of the Spring Martial Hall, Jasper naturally received certain privileges and preferential treatment. His influential position and future role as the village's Chief made it essential for others to avoid offending him and, if possible, forge a favorable relationship. Elder Han, hailing from the Han clan, was no exception. His primary responsibility was to secure his clan's continued growth and prosperity, and one of the most effective ways to achieve this was to establish a strong presence within the Martial Hall and the Spring Village itself. Cultivating a friendship with the future Chief held the promise of numerous benefits and opportunities for both the Han clan and Elder Han personally.

With determination, Jasper initiated the encounter, taking the initiative to bridge the gap between himself and Elder Han. Closing in swiftly, he aimed a precise thrust with his sword towards the elder's left side, compelling Elder Han to sidestep to the right. Capitalizing on this momentary advantage, Jasper swiftly raised his knee in an attempt to displace Elder Han further outside the boundaries of the circle.

However, the experienced Elder Han swiftly reacted, skillfully intercepting Jasper's knee strike with his palm. Seamlessly, he maneuvered around Jasper, delivering a rapid palm strike towards the young student's upper back.

Jasper, displaying his agility, swiftly lowered his body, narrowly evading the attack. Seizing the opportunity, he retaliated by executing a powerful backside kick, aimed at creating distance between himself and the elder, effectively resetting the engagement.

As the battle between Jasper and Elder Han unfolded, the atmosphere in the testing room grew increasingly intense. Both combatants displayed impressive skill and agility, each maneuvering strategically to gain the upper hand.

Undeterred by Elder Han's swift evasion, Jasper swiftly adjusted his stance, his focus unwavering. Sensing an opportunity, he launched a series of lightning-fast strikes, unleashing a flurry of precise sword techniques aimed at exploiting any opening in Elder Han's defenses. His movements were calculated and efficient, showcasing the meticulous training he had undergone within the Spring Martial Hall.

However, Elder Han's experience and mastery of martial arts were evident as he deftly countered each of Jasper's attacks. With fluid grace, he parried and redirected the incoming strikes, his body moving in perfect harmony with the rhythm of the fight. His defense was impeccable, reflecting years of honing his skills and sharpening his reflexes.

As the battle intensified, the two combatants engaged in a mesmerizing dance of strength and agility. Jasper's youthful vigor and determination pushed him to press forward, launching rapid strikes and attempting to exploit any weakness in Elder Han's defenses. The room fell into a momentary stillness as the clash of their movements ceased, leaving only the heavy breathing of the combatants echoing in the silence. The 15-minute time limit had elapsed, marking the end of the test. Beads of sweat adorned their brows, evidence of their exertion and commitment to the fight.

Elder Han, his face marked with a mixture of admiration and respect, nodded to Jasper. "Impressive, Young Master Jasper. You have demonstrated remarkable skill and growth. You have passed the 6th stage test."

Jasper, a mixture of exhaustion and elation, bowed deeply to Elder Han. "Thank you, Elder Han. I will continue to strive for excellence."

Instructor Han, who had been watching from the sidelines, bowed and congratulated Jasper.

"Congratulations, young master, on achieving the 6th stage. May your advancement to the Practitioner realm be smooth," he said with a respectful tone.

With heavy breathing and wiping off his sweat with a towel, Jasper nodded appreciatively at the instructor.

"Mhm, thank you, Instructor," Jasper replied, taking a deep breath. He then turned his attention to Elder Han. "Now that the test is over, I'll be heading to the Mission Hall."

Surprised by Jasper's decision, Elder Han looked at the young master curiously. "Will you be attempting a 4th class test? You have just advanced to the 6th stage. Perhaps practicing and refining your techniques should be your top priority."

"Thank you, Elder Han, for your wise words of advice," Jasper replied respectfully. "However, my father has instructed me to reach the 6th class by the second year. I have only four months and a year left, and I cannot afford to wait."

Elder Han nodded, understanding the Chief's arrangement for the young master. "Even if you decide to complete this mission, remember to temper your foundations carefully, so as not to hinder your future progress."

Nodding in appreciation, Jasper paused and turned his attention to Elder Han.

"Wait a minute, young master," Elder Han called out, halting Jasper just as he was about to leave the hall. Pointing at Instructor Han, he continued, "Let Flay accompany you to the Mission Hall. This way, he can assist you in signing up for the mission and announce your promotion to the 6th stage."

Jasper considered the suggestion for a moment. It would indeed be beneficial to have Flay with him, as it would help establish his identity as a 6th stage practitioner. Unfortunately, due to the Martial Hall's financial constraints, they were unable to provide badges or other forms of identification based on a person's martial arts stage. Jasper remembered discussing this matter with his father, who had mentioned plans to introduce badges for certain stages next year.

"Alright, Instructor Han, please take care of me this time," Jasper agreed, acknowledging the assistance offered by Flay.

Instructor Han approached Jasper with a cheerful laugh. "Ah, it won't be long before the young master enters the Practitioner realm. By that point, our strength will be on the same level. There is no need to be so formal with me."

With all the words said, Jasper and Flay Han said good bye to Elder Han and left in the direction of the Mission Hall.

The path to the Mission Hall wasn't long. After a swift stroll the two reached the gates of the Mission Hall.

The Mission Hall, being of greater value and importance to the Martial Hall, was adorned with a more imposing structure compared to the Testing Hall. It was surrounded by a tall fortification wall, serving as a protective barrier for the valuable resources stored within. Students' collected resources were stored in the Mission Hall and transferred to their designated locations twice a month. Given its significance, the Mission Hall required proper fortification to safeguard against potential threats such as bandits and other groups seeking to exploit the Martial Hall's wealth.

As Jasper and Flay approached the entrance, they were greeted by two guards standing watch. Both guards were at the Practitioner stage, significantly stronger than Instructor Han. Both of these guards were at least middle stage Practitioners while Instructor Han was an initial stage Practitioner. Even Elder Han from before is only a late stage Practitioner.

Upon recognizing Jasper, the guards immediately bowed in respect. However, they informed him that they needed to verify the information of his companion as per the instruction from the Village Elders. Jasper, slightly annoyed, waved his hand dismissively.

"I understand the protocol. We've been through this before. No need to repeat it. Quickly, Instructor Han, let's get this over with," Jasper responded, urging his companion to complete the necessary verification process.
