Chapter 97: Layla

I don’t linger after Jared leaves, and William drops me home. I let myself in but stand staring at the door I closed behind me. My throat burns when I finally let what Jared told me sink in. My mind races through every memory, every moment, looking for signs, and the sad thing is, they were there. I cover the sob that forces its way up my throat. Bert had hit all of us—except Jared and Nelson. My heart pounds. Is that why Nelson killed himself? My eyes burn, and my vision wavers.

"Layla."

I squeeze my eyes shut when I hear Evelyn’s voice. She’s standing behind me, distraught and confused, and yet I don’t know what to tell her. I try to push down my emotions. My face is still wet as I turn to her.

"Do you want to talk about it?" she asks softly, her head tilting to the side.
