Chapter 13: Jared

"Have you heard the rumors?"

I don’t respond.

"Jay?" Alex’s tone holds annoyance.

I look at our group as I sit on the hood of my car. My mind is still stuck on Layla. I spent most of last night obsessively drawing images of her from different times I’ve seen her on campus. I’ve scoured my memory from watching her home, and I drew her standing at the window of her bedroom, her hands raised as she grips either side of her bedroom curtains, ready to pull them together. Every time I’ve seen her, I’ve drawn the moment, capturing her face perfectly.

"What rumors?" I ask, not giving two f*cks as I slide off the hood of my new BMW. I try to keep my Layla watching to a minimum, but I scope out the parking lot and campus grounds for her every few minutes.

"You okay, man?" Mark stuffs his hands into his letterman’s jacket pockets. Navy and white stripes run down the arms. The crest of Kingscourt College is printed in bold gold on the front.
