Chapter 109: A Heart to Heart

Rays of morning sunshine streamed through the window, blinding me the following day. I looked over at Henley, and she was still asleep. Not wanting to wake her, I slipped out of bed and headed into my bedroom to shower. I had to go to the hospital to meet with the hospital administrator to tell him that I was going to take off another month with Henley and wouldn’t be back until it was time for her to start college. If she was going to stay and make an effort, then maybe there was still hope.

After showering, I dressed in a gray suit, white shirt, and tie and headed downstairs. Oftentimes, I wore jeans at the hospital while I was working anyway. The lab coat always dressed it up, along with the stethoscope around my neck. I wasn’t one of those doctors to always wear scrubs. But today, I was meeting with my boss, and he wasn’t going to be happy. I grabbed a pen from my desk, wrote Henley a note, and laid it on the table at her place.
