Chapter 49: Another Dawn

Everything was moving in slow motion as Ember screamed his name and ran toward him with all of her might. The images of that moment seared into her mind.

Avram's cruel grin.

Donovan's look of shock and anguish.

Donovan stumbled forward and she was trying so hard to get to him, to catch him as he fell, but her feet couldn't carry her fast enough.

With one more staggering step, Donovan fell hard against the rampart wall and Ember watched in devastating awe as he fell over the side.

"Donovan!" Ember screamed. She reached the edge of the wall and looked over, searching for his body, through the darkness. But the black churning waters below must have swept it away already. "No."

She was ready to jump over the wall and go after Donovan in her anguished state, but Adrian was there to pull her back.

"Ember, no!" he yelled. "He's gone."
