Chapter 17: The Art of Finesse

"You'll be working with me today," Chalea said. "Valina has some errands I need her to run."

Valina nodded dutifully, and Tavin looked over at her. There was an odd look in his eyes, caught somewhere between sadness and confusion. Something was clearly wrong, but she couldn't tell what it was. She would have to dedicate some of her free time today to finding out.

"Fine," Tavin said. His voice was flat, not carrying any of the spark that he had when they had met earlier this week.

"Now, listen," Chalea said, moving to stand squarely in front of the young man. "I'm not blind; I can see something's in your head. I won't make you cough it up, but you'll have to get past it if you want to learn."

Tavin didn't move at all, still staring at Valina. Chalea grabbed either side of his head and forcefully turned it toward her.

"You *do* want to learn, right kid?" She was already losing patience. Tavin didn't flinch, but couldn't completely hold back a sneer.
