Chapter 1

I made a left turn and jumped over some stones, my heart was thumping rapidly against my chest. My knees were so weak and frail that they could crumble into dust any minute weak as dust. I was barely holding on.

What in the house of hades was going on.

I heard screams in the near distance. Something caught my foot sedning me me tumbling down. My knees graze th cold ground.

That hurt like a bitch.

I glanced at my feet and noticed a large slash on my right leg, not that deep fortunately. I tore a piece of my shirt and tied it around my leg.

My hands are shook violently. I heard another piercing scream in the distance. The air was tense, even the trees were tense as if holding their breath.

Something bad was going on, I just didn't want to stick around long enough to find out what it was.

I quickly rose to my feet and looked around frustration pricked my skin like a needle at the sight around me. There were goddamn tress everywhere. Identical trees, it weren't for the little trail of blood I left behind me I wouldn't have known which direction I came from.

I heard footsteps and something quickly sped past me. My eyes quickly followed the retreating figure. The speed he was going at triggered my anxiety. People only ran that first if they were being chased. I looked over my back for anything threatening spotted nothing, this however does nothing to ease my mind.

I take like the wind my feet moving as fast I could. Even though my lungs rattle in my chest like a toy and felt like they were on fire, I kept on running. The air suddenly grew thinner. I could feel something or someone watching me. Whatever it was It was watching me. I also couldn't shake off the feeling that something bad was about to happen. I kept on running because that's all I could do, for now anyway. I didn't have much energy left.

My lungs reached their limit, I needed to catch my breath so I stopped and leaned by a tree to catch my breath. My toes were numb I couldn't run anymore. I couldn't stand here idly and wait to become someone's supper. I looked around hoping a solution would magically appear infront of me. It did actually appear infront of me I mean technically it was already there but still.

My solution was simple, climb up the tree and hope not to fall off. Maybe wait it out until some form of help appears. There were many possible things that could go wrong up there but I didn't have much of an option.

I looked around for the hundredth time setting my sight on the tree infront of me.

My sanctuary whilst I await to be killed.

I heard more screams. They had gotten though. I started to climb the tree ignoring the rough bark of the tree scratching against my skin. My sweaty palms were making me loose grip. I glanced down I was already a few feet up, I didn't have time to start wipe so I repositioned them holding tightly on the tree.

Grab, hold and pull, grab, hold and pull. I recited these simple steps in my head. It helped distract me from the screams sounding in the night. In that moment in time I was thankful for the two years I spent in kindergarten on the monkey bars. I suddenly heard growling sounds not far below. The hairs on my neck stood up. I decided I didn't want whatever was below to catch up with me so I picked up the speed and climbed faster. I was about eight feet high I had barely covered half of the distance on the tree. There was still more to cover. It started to become harder to ignore the pain throbbing in my body or the way I started to feel dizzy. I spotted a branch up ahead I worked towards reaching it. I just had to hold on for a bit longer. I had to make it at all costs.
