Katie’s POV
The first thing my eyes saw when I opened them was the soft pale golden tendrils of the sun as it played against the honey wood slats of the bedroom walls. The deliciously soft pillow brushed against my face as I turned, pulling the silken sheet around my chest. The room was crisp. My toes sought out his warmth before my hands sought out Diego, or, as I was supposed to call him now, Daniel.
Finding his side of our new bed empty, I pushed back familiar feelings of fear. I sat up in the bed, searching around the still-unfamiliar, expansive master bedroom in our newly acquired two-story cottage home. It was nestled in the North Carolina mountains, sitting on the edge of a lake.
We hadn’t gotten to see much of our new residence when we pulled in late the night before. We were too exhausted. We quickly sought out the only room that was furnished and fell into it.
