“My father came to the decision my mother couldn’t deal well with the heat and the natives and sent her home. Quite frankly, I don’t understand how I ever came to be born, considering how rarely he spent time with her.”
“Geo…are you sure you want to continue?”
“Oh, but I must. I can see how curious you are about it.”

He spoke over me. “Eventually I was born, and you needn’t be alarmed—I’m quite legitimate, I assure you.”
In spite of his words, I ached for the poor boy and the man he’d grown into. It was no doubt fortunate he was unaware of my thoughts. Sympathy was the last thing he’d want.
