CHAPTER 28

I groaned as I turned

"Shut up" I told my alarm but, it just continued being annoying. Irritated I got up and shut it up, the sleep now totally gone from my eyes. I looked at the time

There was still time for me to get to work so, I took quite a bit of my time

I looked through my clothes for quite a while before settling for a grey shirt with a closet mix white blazer. I took a pair of shoes the same color of my blazer while the bag was the same color of my dress. Not wanting to go all out, I just wore on a golden necklace along with a golden bracelet. After placing my hair up in a messy bun, I went downstairs

9:00

I still had an hour left. I prepared a peanut buttered and jam sandwich with a cup of coffee and ate it in no hurry

For some known or unknown reason, I was feeling quite happy

When I had finally decided to get to work, I went out and entered my car

Got to work four minutes before resuming time

Good work, Mel

I got to our office expecting to see Jace but, I guess he hasn't arrived yet. Before I could sit down, the door opened

"Good morning, my beautiful chihuahua. A pleasant morning, isn't it?" he said as he entered the office

"Don't call me chihuahua, you psycho" was my reply to his greeting

"And you just called me psycho. Who wants to be called a psycho? Not even a psycho wants to be called a psycho" he said as he went to his seat

"And by the way, you look splendid" he commented

I smiled

"Have you heard anything from Alex?"

"No, my phone has been turned off since you put it of. Why?"

"You didn't on your phone since then?" I asked him

He's definitely not normal

"Yes, is there anything wrong with that?"

"Is there anything wrong? You.."

I decided to just leave that topic, there was no use

"Forget it" I told him and he just shrugged

"What am I hearing from Alex?" he asked going back to the original topic

"Have you forgotten that abruptly left the conference room in the middle of a serious meeting" I asked him

He gasped

"That right, I totally forgot"

"How could you forgot?"

"Well it's not my fault I had a weekend that I would love to repeat over and over again?"

"Which weekend?"

I gasped as I heard a different voice. I turned to the door and saw Sky along with Jade

Why didn't he close the door? It's simply sense

"Sky, Jade" I called with a smile that said nothing happened but, either they ignored it or they didn't get it

"What happened to your weekend?" Jade asked again

"Nothing" I replied faster than I thought which seemed suspicious even to me since he asked Jace the question. Sky narrowed her eyes at me but, before either of them could talk, I stood up

*What wrong with me?*

"Do you guys need anything?" I asked them

"Well, we came to ask how you guys are and that we are having a meeting now but .."

"We are fine, as you can see" I interrupted her

*Why am I fidgeting?* I asked myself

"And we will be at the conference room in a second. Thanks for coming" I said ignoring their protest as I ushered them out of the door and closed it, my back resting on the door in relieve

I signed and look at Jace who was now in front of his desk

"That was close"

"What was? Them knowing about what happened during the weekend or .."

"Jace" I called slowly and calmly

They could still be outside

Okay, I seriously needed a talk with myself. I know I've change but still, this isn't me

"What?" he came to my front, took me away from the door to my table, bent till we were eye level, and whispered

"I don't give a care about anyone finding out that you're my woman. Apart from if it puts you in danger"

Then he stood upright and made to head out but, I grabbed his hand

"Will you be okay? Alex will ask and same thing Jade brought up last week will be said again?" I asked him really concerned

He smiled and caressed my cheek

"I have you" he said and left

Although he arrived before me, he waited at the door

"Couldn't enter without you" he said to my questioning look with a small nervous smile. I gave him a comforting smile then pushed the door opened, entering first. I gave a look smile to the eyes on us and went to sit, Jace beside me

"Sorry for leaving suddenly that day" I apologized

"Sorry for not calling you back, Alex" Jace apologized

"It's cool but are you guys okay" Alex asked

As always, Alex is the best boss

"Yes, we just had a situation" Jace said with a smile

"Are you sure? The way it looked seemed like.." Olive

"Yes" I interrupted her

"We just had to go suddenly but, everything is alright now" I assured her with a smile

"Does it have anything to do with what I brought up?" Jade suddenly asked

I went under the table and touched Jace's hand but, it was as if he wasn't affected

"You really should stop watching those drama" Jace told him with a smile while Sky hit Jade's head

"What? I was curious" he protested

"Next time, be curious about sensible things, okay" she told him and Jace laughed

"Let's start the meeting" he said

I was just looking at him, surprised. When he noticed my gaze, he turned to look at me, smiled and gentle squeezed my hand with a gesture that say 'I'm okay. Don't worry'. I smiled back at him and looked forward only to see Sky's questioning look. I smiled at her, shrugged my should and looked at Alex

"Well, we stopped not too long after you guys left so, you didn't really miss anything that can't be discussed again" Alex started

I smiled apologetically

"The victim's a prosecutor, the results states that it's the same perp. Since it's the same perp, getting the weapon isn't part of the main agenda but, I still put out search team for it but nothing had been found yet. That's about it for the case"

"Is there anything else about the victim except that she's a prosecutor" Jace asked

"That's right. Ken"

He put on the projector and displayed a picture I'm assuming is the victim

"Funmi Adesioye. She's Africa, Nigerian to be exact. She is known for winning ninety eight percent of all her cases. In summary, she's a big shot but, she's less than average in class. She was assigned this case after the witness of the first murder. She's 42 but isn't married. Her parents are still alive along with her younger sister but, as she was a devoted prosecutor, she didn't bother to get married"

"A distraction" Jace said

"What?" Alex asked

"He's using a distraction. All of his previous victims were normal and alone. One or no family members, a simply worker, average life but, this time it's different. She has a family, she may be less than average but she's a big shot in her workplace; she's even the one in charge of his case. He did a grand entrance through the windows but this time, he broke in through the door. He's trying to make us and all the people on his case have the slightest possibility of doubt so, he killed a prosecutor this time. He's a smart psychopath" Jace said

Jade clapped

"Wow, you're the best" he said with giving Jace his thumb up

"That seems like it" Alex said

"Even if he's still the suspect, just a bit of doubt could be in his advantage. That's true" Sky said

"What of the knife? He could have used a different weapon?" Ken asked

"Him using the same weapon could add to the doubt more than you think" Jace answered

"They could ask themselves the same question you just asked and more doubt would begin to form" I added

"So, what do we do?"

"We continue doing what we have to do. Check the weapon if we find it and move on to the next thing" Alex said

"We will know the next stage when it comes but for now.." he stopped

"We need to know if the survival of what happened ten years ago is still alive and who the person is" he completed

I held his hand and he held back but, when I looked at his face, it was peaceful. And it was genuine

I smiled
