Chapter 16: Conditions

Vix walked to the back of the cave, rubbing her sore shoulders as she did. A steep, smooth slope led upward into the blackness. “That’s where we fell from?” she confirmed. Vix stuck her head out as far as she could and looked up. She could not see even a glimmer of light above.

Caine joined her, his shoulders tense. “I’m sure I’m not the only one to think of this,” he said, “but won’t Cassidy realize we’re down here sooner or later? When she sees we’re not dead, I mean.”

“Hopefully, that won’t be a problem,” Mirra said.

Vix turned to look at her. “What do you mean?”

“Well, you saw the size of that storm she threw at us, didn’t you? She probably obliterated the entire valley we were in with that one transmutation. There wouldn’t be any bodies left to find, after that.”

Mirra came closer, shot a quick look upward, then walked quickly away again, as though half afraid something was going to come flying out at her from the dark. “Probably.”
