"Jackson, can I have a word with you?" His father called disappointed evident in his face.
Lilian jumped in surprise, letting go of Jake. "Sorry Sir, I didn't know you were here," she tried to apologize only to be cut off by Foster Lynn who lifted his hand up signalling her to shut up.
Foster Lynn had heard of Juliet's bad history, and it seemed her daughter had taken after her. Jumping from one person to another, defrauding people. He couldn't help but wonder how his son seemed close to her despite having Selene.
In living room Lilian looked at Selene who seemed to be smirking at her. "Seems like father-in-law doesn't like you," Selene mocked her.
"I'll not forgive for this Selene, you are so cruel," she said coming at her. Selene laughed, "what did I do, it seems someone else can see you for whom you really are." Lilian raised her hand to slap her, but Selene caught it midway.
"In your house you can treat me poorly but in My house, you are deranged to think you can touch me!" Selene exclaimed, causing Lilian to retreat in fear.
In the parking lot, Foster couldn't find the right words to warn his son, he stood there looking at him in disappointment.
"Dad I can explain," Jake stated not sure if explaining would do any good.
"Don't bother, but make sure whatever games you are playing with that woman, don't involve the company," Foster Lynn warned sternly.
Jake watched his father leave, confused at what he had against Lilian, yet he seemed to love Selene.
The night of the gala had finally arrived. After what happened Selene could only swallow her pain.
"But I promised to marry her grandma," Selene heard a male's voice as she was passing by. The voice caught her attention, she could never mistake Jake's voice for anything.
Selene drew near to listen in everybody seemed too busy to notice. "Oh my boy, you have a wife now, and you have to respect her."
"But grandma, I promised Lene marriage when we were young," Jake said.
Selene couldn't stop herself from going nearly against the half locked door. She found it difficult to believe the sight before her, there he was Jake in all his glory placing his head on his the old woman lap. Selene could never have believed that he had a soft side if she didn't see it for herself.
Selene admired the view before her, accidentally knocking over a flower pot that was just by the door. Jake sat up looking at her in disbelief.
"How long have you been there!" Jake in reprimand.
"Sorry I… I…" Selene stammered not sure what to say. Her face filled with guilt and embarrassment.
"Oh my god child, come here, look at how beautiful you have grown," the old woman beside Jake called her. Selene felt confused, she was acting as if she knew her all her life.
"Come child, don't be scared, is this the woman you were telling me about?" She asked turning to Jake.
"No grandma, this is my wife Selene, why are you acting like you know her?" Jake asked furrowing his brows in shock.
"Don't be rude son, go tend to the guest I would like a word with your wife," she said holding Selene's hand.
Immediately after Jake locked the door behind him, the woman patted on the spot beside her.
"Come sit dear, I know you are shocked, but I'll explain everything okay?" She said smiling charmingly at her.
Selene sat on the bed, not understanding how she got from being scolded to being treated politely.
"Was your mother Sofia Rogers," she asked looking at Selene, her eyes curious.
"Yes, how did you know?" Selene inquired, confused at how Jake's grandmother knew her late mom.
" You look just like her sweetie, forgive my manners, I am Rose Lynn, the eldest member of the Lynn family," she said chuckling.
Selene didn't know what to say, she looked at the woman as if asking her to continue her explanation.
As if telling what was in Selene's mind, Rose Lynn continued, "you were so young when your mother came for business meeting with Jackson's father, you always played with him, he talked a lot about you actually, always looking forward to your next visit."
Selene had always had blurred memories of her moments with her mom, but that didn't explain why she was bringing it up.
" Your last visit you were sad that you couldn't meet Jackson since he had been transferred abroad," she explained triggering a memory in Selene's head.
Selene's eyes widened in realization. This couldn't be true, was Jackson her childhood love? All she could remember was when she was twelve years her mother took her along to visit him and all she got was a sealed letter.
She remembered having opened the letter only to find the ring necklace she had been wearing and a promise letter to look for her when he returned. A smile broke from her lips. But how did Lilian take her place? Selene couldn't understand.
"Dear, you seem lost, don't you remember any of that?" Rose asked squeezing her shoulder. Selene didn't want this kind woman heartbroken from her problems with Jake.
She smiled at her and said, "it was such a long time ago, I don't remember."
"The world has its ways of bringing you together, who would have thought that you would be married to him?" Rose mused smiling broadly.
Selene had yet to ponder all that had happened, but one thing was for sure; she had to let Jake know what a pretender Lilian was and that she was his real childhood love.
Soon the event was over, Selene noticed Jake kept avoiding her. During the whole event she had seen him once during the dance which was short-lived as he was whisked away by Lilian.
The mansion seemed cold without him. Selene smiled in anticipation, she could only imagine his shock when found out the truth about their childhood promise.
She still hoped he had kept her favorite mini doll plastic chair. She had always admired to sit on an office chair and be prominent like her mother. She had given him that, left it to their housekeeper to give it to him.
Selene woke to the banging of the front door, ushering in a furious Jake. She rose abruptly from the sofa feeling her muscles ache. She had fallen asleep waiting for he which looked like he never came home.
"So this is what you have been doing behind my back!" Jake's practically shouted at her throwing pictures at her.
"Jake what all this?" Selene asked fully awake. The tone of his fury making her confused as she picked up one of the pictures.
Her eyes widened in disbelief, there she was almost naked in bed with the bartender. There was no denying that was her as her face was visible.
"Jake I can explain, it was Lilian…"
"Lilian's fault? She said you would try to put it all on her, you are despicable Selene!" Jake said veins protruding from his forehead.
"Babe I told you she hates me, she would do this," Lilian seemed to appear out of nowhere.
"Jake let me explain please," Selene pleaded knowing she stood no chance before Lilian's lying mouth.
"You want to explain, after I almost locked your lover in the police cell?" Jake asked in disbelief. He couldn't believe how cruel Selene was, denying her lover to the extent of staging an argument at the bar that day. To think he had publicly claimed her as his wife before that lowlife, Jake felt used and stupid.
"Lover? What are you talking about?" Selene asked at this point she felt deranged. The bartender was nowhere near her lover, but Jake wouldn't believe her.
"Well dear sister, your lover confessed to you two being together so quit the pretense," Lilian mocked her. She seemed so proud of what she had accomplished.
Jake paced back and forth in the living room. Lilian whispering sweet nothings to his ears. Selene stood there frozen waiting for her verdict. No one would believe her anyway.
" I want you out of this house by this evening and make sure to go quietly don't cause any drama, I can't have a whore for a wife!" Jake's pained voice said looking away from her. As if he didn't wish to see her face.
