Beyond: The dark ages

“There is no right or wrong, only what is and what isn’t.” The hooded figure uttered, the pressure in the air palpable as he sneered, has arms coming together. “And you should not be here. You...are what isn't.” ~~~ The dark ages were at hand and realms grew impatient, the difference between protagonists and antagonists seemed to blur under the flickering flame that lit up their world. There they where, at the mercy of all who were greater. Threats and blessings at all turns and corners, who could tell them apart? Not even the wisest. Some seeded order, order of power, of what should and shouldn’t be. Though this meant nothing to those whom their lives had been suddenly torn apart from perfectly normal to an ethereal hurricane of the unnatural. Maraja was one of these unlucky souls, along with a few other of our growing protagonists. Where she belonged, who she was, none of these made sense anymore after the attack on earth. As would any other eighteen year old, she tried to run away from the truth, to hide behind the realm she had grown up in. She could not. Earth was no place to hold her growing power anymore and she had to leave. Read not only of Maraja, but also of all those who acted as both catalysts and hindrances to a somewhat greater good. Their actions would weld hidden agendas and pride into the grand tapestry surrounding every realm. And in these dark times, there would be a bright light, or so did the prophecy foretell. Yet again trust would hardly survive this ordeal, for it seemed revenge, greed and denial were the whispers of the dark ages.

A Story Untold

Half a decade ago…

It was a drizzly night as the full moon shone its borrowed light upon the realm of the protectors, Vanardon.

A blinding streak of lightning colored the dark sky, casting a momentary glow on the fair faces of the Vanreis, as they milled about as the day came to an end.

"Mother!" Khione called out, her tiny sandals hitting the ground as she raced to welcome her mother home.

"Kada love, why're you wearing those?" The woman ruffled her daughters hair fondly, the lights inside casting a warm glow on her young-looking face.

"I'm a ten and five years today, so I went up to the attic just like you told me."

Her mother dusted her flowing cream gown before entering the house fully, her yellow eyes accessing the state of it. "Kada I never told you to make such a mess! It's your fifteenth year, you should know it comes with much more responsibilities."

"I'm sorry mother, I'll clean up right away." Khione took off the now-undersized sandals, putting them in an open carton. "Will Kiera be home soon?" She asked timidly as she began clapping her hands and snapping her fingers in a rhythmic way, her eyes glowing as rings of energy popped up under the scattered boxes, carrying them up into the dark attic.

Her mother watched her in awe as she remembered the days she had such power. "Show off!"

Khione whirled around, her sandy blonde hair and gown following her body. "Forgive me!" She giggled, padding towards the beautiful woman.

"Oh don't mind me love, I'm thrilled you're getting better at your attuned principle." She took out a covered plate of pie from the bag she brought home. "And no, your brother won't be able to join us till tomorrow."

A sad frown spread itself across Khione's young face. "But I haven't see him all day! Where did he go? I can join him there."

"And leave your poor mother all alone?" Khione's head drooped in realization and her mother smiled at her affectionately. "It's okay love. If it was a journey you where old enough to follow, you would've been informed. Your brother will be back in the morning. I promise." She unwrapped the delicious looking pie and slid it to the middle of the table. "Now let's eat, shall we?"

Khione smiled happily at her mother as they ate comfortably, the drizzles and occasional thunder strikes filling the quiet little house.

~~~
Later that night, a particularly strong thunder bolt attacked the skies.
Khione gasped sitting upright, her eyes wide with fear. "Oh, still the rain." She reached back, grabbing her pillow, hugging it tightly as she thought of where her brother could possibly be at that very moment and why he would leave her behind without so much as a word.
She heard the front door open, followed by a grunt.
"Mother?" Her eyes glowed as she listened on trying to decipher what was going on in the living room.
She heard her mothers door creak open, followed by the soft sound of feet stepping against stone. "Who's there?" Her mother said, Khione's feet creeping even closer.
"Calypso."
An overwhelming voice filled the air and Khione's hands flew to her ears in pain.
Her mother stopped in her tracks at the sight of the being, falling to her knees in reverence. "Hala gak tarak, Tride Deimos."
The Tride smiled, his presence overwhelming Calypso, as he snapped his fingers, light filling the house. "I'll go straight to the point, Vanrei. You will lead an uprising against your Tride. You will make him listen to the rest of the Trides or I will kill you."
Calypso struggled to speak under the powerful presence of the Tride. "I…can't…"
"Oh! Dear me…" he backed away as she took in deep breaths looking up at him from across the room.
"Pardon me, but I'm not sure I understand, your assignment-"
"There is nothing to understand, woman!" Deimos raised his voice, the thunder in the sky intensifying and the lights flickering. "Your Tride has paid everyone deaf ears long enough. It seems he only hears the utterances of his creations so you will gather every Vanrei in your realm and you will demand he listen to us."
Khione dabbed at the blood trickling down from her throbbing ears as she crawled into the living room, stashing herself behind a foam-covered wooden chair.
"My Lord, I don't think anyone would listen to me, I am but as powerless as I can get I-"
"Do not test me, woman. You will do as I say." He fixed his eyes on the bewildered woman.
Khione's body throbbed in pain as she struggled to move in the presence of a Tride.
"I cannot do much-"
Deimos slammed his fist into the wooden table, splinters of wood flying across the house as Calypso's ears bled, her body straining against the angry Tride.
"Mother!" Khione crawled out of her hiding spot, tears in her eyes as she clung to her bleeding mother.
The light in the bulbs gave out, leaving only the white glow of Deimos's eyes.
"How pathetic. To think you knew this would be your fate the moment you reproduced. To have these creatures suck out all your power as you birth them."
"Stay away from my mother!" Khione screamed in pain and anger as she tried everything in her power to draw out her principle.
The Tride laughed condescendingly, the sound overpowering even the thundering outside. "I see you have not come of age, Vanrei child. Your mother will die today because she birthed you. Remember that. She will be the first of your kind to be die, surely this will grab his attention."
His glowing eyes moved to the whimpering woman. "Perish, woman."
As the words left his cruel mouth, Calypso's eyes widened, her heart slowing to a stop as she struggled to make out her daughters face.
"K…ka…" blood painted the woman's mouth in the dark house as she fought for the strength to talk.
"Mother no…" Khione wept, ignoring her own pain as shook her head vigorously. "Don't go, mother."
Calypso gave up trying to speak as she admired her daughter one last time.
"Mother who was that? I will avenge you, mother. Just tell me who that was…please." She stared into her mothers lifeless eyes, her heart squeezing in an unbearable pain.
"MOTHER!"
