The look of shock on Elsie's face became even stronger as she said in a trembling voice, "Wife?"
Kai just gave a nod before waving at the woman who had appeared in the restaurant.
That woman came over to his side and after being introduced, she greeted Elsie, "Hello, it's a pleasure meeting one of my husband's dear friends. I've heard all about you from him."
Elsie just stared at the two of them in a daze.
Everyone around could see the heartbroken look in her eyes. In fact, they could even hear the sounds of her heart cracking.
That was everyone except for Kai who still didn't understand what was happening.
Even his wife could see the brokenhearted look in Elsie's eyes…
After a long period of silence, Elsie suddenly grabbed the staff from Yami and gathered her magic power.
This time, Yami didn't stop her and just waved her hand to create a barrier around the two of them. She had also used her magic to bring Kai's wife away at the same time, pulling her out of the barrier.
Kai still had a confused look, but facing the magic of the Sage Elsie, he couldn't just resist it with his body.
With a flick of his hand, the bracelet on his wrist suddenly disappeared and in its place, there was a giant sword that appeared in front of him. He didn't swing out with this sword, but rather placed it right in front of him to block Elsie's spell.
The sword had no problem facing the dark flames that Elsie released from her staff, scattering them as they made contact. As for the scattered flames that flew out around him, they hit their barrier and were dissipated.
No one in the barrier was hurt at all by the dark flames.
Kai quickly said, "Elsie, what are you doing? I don't know why you're so angry, but there are innocent people here. You can't just throw these kinds of spells like this!"
But Elsie wouldn't listen at all as she threw more flames at Kai.
Kai could only block those flames with a helpless look on his face as he waited for her to calm down.
After throwing flames for a full five minutes, Elsie finally said with an aggrieved look, "Why am I so angry? How can I not be angry when you broke our promise like this!?"
"Promise?" Kai asked with a confused look on his face.
Hearing this, Elsie's face was filled with rage again as she started throwing even more flames at him.
Kai just blocked the flames as he turned to Yami and said, "Hey, stop watching and help me already! Isn't this your restaurant? Aren't you afraid that she'll destroy it?"
Yami just calmly looked at him and said, "You deserve it, so I'm on her side."
"Huh?" That was all Kai could say.
Elsie heard this and couldn't help looking at Yami with a grateful look even though she was filled with rage. She then turned back at Kai and threw more and more attack spells at him until she was completely out of mana.
With no choice, Kai could only take the spells that she threw at him.
While she threw her spells, she did hold back in the end since it wasn't as if she wanted to hurt him, she was just angry at him. So while she gathered all her mana for the spells, she had toned them down at the last second so that they would only deal minor injuries if they hurt him.
Kai had been a hero as well and after coming to this world, it wasn't as if he had suddenly lost his powers.
This was a person that had been a hero for a long time and was at the same level as Elsie, so it was easy for him to block her attacks without suffering any damage at all. Of course, the one that bore the brunt of this attack was the Sacred Sword Schral.
This was a holy armament from their world, only used by the strongest of heroes. This wasn't something that could break easily, so it was able to easily dispel the spells that were thrown at him.
Once she was out of mana, all she could do was sit there on the ground and cry.
Seeing this, Yami dispelled the barrier around them with a wave of her hand.
Kai just stood there with an awkward look on his face as he didn't know what to do. To his surprise, it was his wife that suddenly came forward and took Elsie in her arms, patting her on her back as she let her cry on her shoulder.
Elsie was too emotionally distressed to care who came to comfort her, she just wanted someone to comfort her…
So she buried her head into Kai's wife's shoulder and just let out all her tears.
As for the other customers in the store…they weren't boorish enough to stare at a young girl as she cried like this. Even without Yami glaring at them threateningly, they all tactfully turned away from the scene.
After all, it wasn't in their tastes to watch this young girl cry like this…
Though, she wasn't actually a young girl. She just looked young because of her half elf heritage.
It took half an hour before Elsie was finally able to calm down.
During this time, Kai just stood there with an awkward look on his face, not knowing what to do at all. At the same time, Yami also stopped working and stood by them watching everything since this was also related to her.
When Elsie finally calmed down, her eyes were completely red and her voice was hoarse as well.
Yami handed a bag of ice to Kai's wife who used it to dab her eyes to help them cool down and reduce the swelling.
When she was calm, Elsie looked up at Kai again with a sad look, but she asked, "Do you really not remember our promise at all?"
This was the last hope that she had.
It was possible that Kai had lost part of his memories when he came to this world. If that was the case, it made sense that he had forgotten about his promise to her and that was why he married.
Kai revealed a confused look as he asked, "Promise? Did we make a promise?"
Elsie nodded and said, "You promised that we would safely return from the demon king's castle hand in hand. When that time came, you and I would live happily together forever."
Kai revealed an awkward look and said, "I know that I couldn't keep my promise, but is it really that big of a deal? We were able to stop the demon king and that's all that matters, right?"
Elsie's eyes started tearing up again as she said, "But why did you have to get married? I was waiting for you the entire time because I never believed that you were dead! I waited for twenty years!"
Kai revealed a confused look as he asked, "Waiting? Why would you be waiting for me? Also, what does getting married have to do with breaking our promise?"
Elsie revealed a look of complete shock and disbelief.
On the side, Kai's wife revealed a sympathetic look as she knew exactly what had happened. She had already guessed it earlier when she heard the interaction between the two of them, but she didn't say it because she was afraid that she would hurt Elsie even more when she was emotionally unstable.
But now that Kai had said it right to her face…
Elsie revealed a look of distress after this as she muttered, "But we promised to be together…"
Kai's wife patted her on the back before turning to her husband and saying, "Dear, sometimes you really are too dense for your own good."
Kai was shocked when he heard this. He turned to look at Yami and Lin Fan who had come out to see what was happening.
Both of them nodded in agreement to her statement.
Kai's look of shock filled with even more shock as he muttered to himself, "I'm dense? What do you mean by that?"
He looked around the restaurant, looking at the friends that he had made over the years for some kind of help.
However, there wasn't a single person in the restaurant that was on his side.
All of them looked at him like he was an idiot and also looked at Elsie with looks of sympathy.
Kai stopped looking around and closed his eyes to think long and hard about it. After a few minutes, he finally hit his palm with his fist and said, "Oh!"
Then his eyes opened wide as he looked at Elsie and said, "Oh! You mean! You were!"
As he stuttered these words out, unable to form a complete sentence, his face filled with more and more shock and disbelief. Finally he was able to compose himself, but his voice had become much smaller as he asked, "You're saying that you were confessing at that time?"
Elsie looked like she was about to completely collapse.
She had thought that she had made her feelings clear over the years that they had traveled together. She had thought that he had felt the same towards her and that they had promised to live happily ever after together.
But it turned out that it had all just been an illusion.
He had never felt that way about her and had always only thought of her as a friend.
As the wave of emotions hit her, she couldn't hold back the tears once again and she burst into tears once more. She grabbed Kai's wife and threw herself into her embrace as she cried more and more tears.
At this point, there was already a wet spot on Kai's wife's shirt from all her crying. It was already at the point where she was worried that she might dehydrate herself from all this crying…
But she kept patting her on the back and comforting her.
That was because she knew exactly what she was going through…
When she had met Kai, she had suffered through the same denseness. It had taken her a long time and a lot of effort before she was finally able to break through that dense mind of his. It really was a long road to reach the point where she was now.
Kai just helplessly stood there once again, not knowing what to do with this situation.
Finally, he said with a sigh, "Alright, can we please just talk about this? I can't say that I can accept your feelings right now, but at least we can have a proper talk about it, alright?"
When Elsie heard this, she immediately stopped crying and looked up to give him a nod.
At the very least, she could see some hope of this ending the way that she wanted it to end.
At this point, there was no time to care about her own pride…
Denser than bread.
