Beneath the surface

“Why do you follow me around?” I asked him whilst walking out of the school. “You seem interesting, and I like you.” His accented voice said calmly. I stopped and turned around. “I’ve know you for three days and you’ve already decided you like me? That fast.” I smiled slightly as he laughed. --------------------------------------------- Odette is a girl who needs more help than anything else. She’s a girl who wants nothing more than to feel something more than sadness or pain. Blake is a boy who needs to get out of his own habits. Abditory

Abditory (n.) a place into which you can disappear; a hiding place.

-------------------------------------------

Friday 7:00 A.M._

My alarm went off in my ear, I reached my hand over and turned it off, laying in bed for a couple of minutes deciding whether to go to school or stay home. I had to go or else Jenifer would tell me that she was going to call my principal and have me expelled for a week. The last time I was sick she did that as a way of teaching me a lesson on how skipping was not an option.

She said I needed to go to school, so I could move out during college and stay away after that, she said that after senior year she didn't want to see my ugly face ever again. It's been 5 months till this year and I'm finally a senior. Then I can move out of this hellhole.

I got up, putting my hair into a bun. I went to my closet to pick out some clothes. I decided on a pair of mom jeans and a tight-ish yellow spaghetti strap. I found my grey Doc Martens and put those on. I went into the bathroom to do my hair so my curls aren't as frizzy.

I brushed my teeth, grabbed my bag, and went downstairs.

"Oh sweetie you look so pretty today!" Jenifer was complimenting Olivia.

Olivia wore a white pencil dress that's down to her mid thigh, her feet had black strappy heels on. Her face was caked in makeup, I'm not going to judge her. She can do whatever she wants. I do think it's a little too much for a Friday at school though.

"Thanks mama, I didn't know what to wear but I figured it would be the simplest." She smiled looking over her outfit.

"Mama" she used to call our mom "mama" now she calls Jenifer that. I have yet to even call her mom in the 3 years her and my dad have been married. Which she hates when we're at social events, at me and Olivia's 16th birthday party last year I didn't call her "mom" and she made sure to ruin it for me. I wasn't allowed to open my presents till after the party, and I was sent to get stuff during the party like getting her another glass of. When everybody sang happy birthday she told me to go upstairs because I didn't deserve it. I obeyed because I didn't want to cause a scene but in her mind I already did.

"Good Morning Odette." Jenifer said coldly as I reached her line of view.

"Good Morning Jennifer." I kept my head down not wanting nay extra attention from her.

I went to the kitchen to grab a quick breakfast. I got an apple from the fridge. I sat down at the table and started to eat it going through my backpack making sure everything was done and all my homework was there. After I checked everything I put it all back and checked my phone for the time. 7:48.

" Olivia we need to go!" I shouted from the dining room. I picked up my bag and threw my apple core away heading straight for the front door not wanting to hear anything from Jennifer.

I heard talking between them in the living room. I opened the front door and headed for my Jeep. It was black. I liked it because it was simple. I know with the amount of money my father had I could've gotten something like a BMW, but I liked being able to take the doors off and go down to the beach or ride up the hills to the waterfall we had not far from where I lived.

I made my way towards school. I knew Olivia would be late due to the fact she has to pick up her coffee from the local café not far from school. One time we both took my car because she had to get hers fixed, and she spilled coffee all over my center console and made me late for school. I had to clean it all up after school and explain to my father what happened. He understood and let it go but Jennifer had to put in her input and say that I needed to be punished for being late and now making them pay to have it cleaned up by a professional. My dad told her that he and I had already figured it out.

She threw a fit and my dad bought her a new pair of earrings because she said it was the only thing that was going to make her feel better about me not treating her like my real mom.

All these years and I've never got the guts to tell her to just shut up. I was never going to call her my mom. She'd never be my mom, and she needed to get that through her thick skull. My mom died when I was 13 and I haven't had her since. That's it. You get one and done. So even if she did treat me like a human I'd never call her mom.

Maybe I would I thought

But she doesn't deserve it.

I pulled into the parking spot that was closest to the front. I got out of the car and got my bag from the other side of the car. I walked in and went straight to my locker then straight to class. I sat in the back corner away from everyone. There's a seat free next to me but the one in front was taken but a girl with black hair.

The teacher walked in and started talking. I immediately zoned out and looked out the window. I saw a black mustang pull up and a boy with black hair step out with a cigarette in his mouth. He inhaled one more time before dropping it and putting it out with his foot exhaling the smoke. He looked over at me and made eye contact. I broke it when my math teacher called on me.

"Ms. Newcrest is there anything you like to share with the class about what's so interesting?" the balding middle-aged mad asked.

"Yes actually there was a boy outside, a new one. I haven't seen him here yet." I turned back to the window.

"Oh yes that actually reminds me, students we have a new student. His name is-" he was cut off by the door opening and shutting with a slam.

"Blake Finley Mitchells sir." The same boy from the parking lot said. He had an accent. He sounded like he was from somewhere in Europe I just couldn't place where.

"And you're late. Sit next to…" He scanned the room "Ms. Newcrest." He pointed.

"Odette raise your hand please." I slowly put my hair in the air.

He walked over to me, his eyes were these bright orbs of green. Almost making forget what was going on. He was tall almost around 6'2 with freckles that covered a good part of his body from the looks of it. He had muscles, they weren't big in your face, but they were there.

He sat down looking at me the whole time. I put my hand down and looked forward.

"Odette, such a pretty name for a pretty girl." He smirked and looked forward leaning back in his chair.
