"It's a kidney stone."
"But..."
Suxin's heart, which had just settled, clenched again upon hearing the word "but."
"But what?" Seeing Mrs. Cheng's anxious face, Suxin knew the illness wasn't that simple.
"The doctor said the stone is lodged at a critical spot and needs some kind of laser surgery. Your father's test results are all very poor, and he's even experiencing hematuria. I'm really worried..."
"Then get him admitted for surgery right away. How can you bear to see Dad in so much pain?" She turned to look at her father's ashen face, the large beads of sweat rolling down his forehead, and felt her heart being twisted.
"There are no beds available. The urology ward is full, even the extra beds, and the nurse just gave him a dose of pethidine. She told us to get an IV for now, then go home and wait, and they'll call us when a bed is available," Mrs. Cheng said anxiously.
"When will there be a bed available then?" Suxin asked urgently.
