8 --Last Nights

Then, she giggled,

“Do you know what happened last night? Well, this morning also. The ritual, the ritual of penance. With the smokes, and people dressed in whites. All my so called friends whom you’ve met were there, ready to give their best sacrifices. Their wishes were granted. All they’d asked for, was given, I’d asked for nothing, and I’d done none of what they’d asked. So, I got hurt, and even though I’d steeled my heart, told myself how much I’d gotten used to being punished, I still felt the deep sting. Tearing my back, breaking me. And it hurt, it hurt so so much. "

Then turning to me with her usual smile,

“I can’t leave. They’ll come after you, they’ll torture Kamsi, and God knows that they’ve done enough of that, they’ll destroy your family. And no matter what I do, the bond will still exist. My father signed me up to them for life, so I have no way out. I never bothered telling you to move out of our apartment, cause they’d eventually find you if they decide to. They want you, they really really want you, and they will hurt you, they’ll end you, and they’ll talk about how it’s a sacrifice you have to make for your future. Those gifts I stole from you, those meetups I dragged you out of, were supposed to break the last barrier keeping you intact.”

With that smile on her face, her eyes fluttered close, and as I watched, it dawned on me that I could help,

“I can help, all we need to do is give my mother a call. We can help you, just, follow me.”

With that, clothed in the darkest shade of red I’d ever seen her don, her breathing stopped, the clock on the wall seized to tick, and the curtains in her room closed shut, all on their own.
