My breath was stuck in my throat as I stared at the spot where he disappeared. The words he said kept playing through my head like a broken record.
My mother had said… he loved me… my mother had said… he loved me… my mother… my mother, my mother, my mother… oh dear god my mother.
“MOTHER!” I screeched.
I had never made it to her house so fast in all my life. Slamming the door open, I screamed her name through the house. She came racing out of the kitchen in her bathrobe with curlers still in her hair.
“Goodness, Vie, what happened?” she asked, taking in my disheveled look with one glance.
“How dare you?” I ground out between clenched teeth.
Her mouth dropped to her knees and her brown eyes gave me an indignant look.
“You need to watch how you speak to me, young lady.”
