The Battle for Wesnoth takes place in a world populated by Tolkienesque races such as humans, elves, dwarves,orcs, as well as Wesnoth-specific races such as dragon-like Drakes. When Garard II, King of Wesnoth, was slain in battle, Queen Asheviere ordered the rest of the King's nephew to be murdered, as they were next in line to the throne.
