DREW
''Good morning boys. Heard you lost another race last night, pervert! How much did you let slip through your fingers this time, 1...2millon naira?'' An overly cheerful voice asked as the owner of the said voice dropped casually on the sit in front of Hossein with her back to me only turning to steal a piece of beacon from my breakfast plate while smirking like the she-devil she is and I pushed my food away suddenly losing my appetite. I glared at her heatedly clearly warning her to back off.
How the hell did she find out about last night's race?
''It was 3million'' Min answered her question and I glared at him. 'Dude I know you wanna get into her panties but bros before hoes asshole!' he shrunk back like a kicked puppy, while the very bane of my existence had the nerve to chuckle and Hossein being the ever gentleman he is asked...
''How are you doing today, Maya?''
Just like that, her devilish smirk vanished and she's suddenly all sweet with a huge smile and is all over him talking shit about some book he's currently reading. Like who the hack reads during breakfast? Fucking Hossein! That's who. One look at Min and I knew exactly what he's thinking, what's up with these two?
Hossein only smiles on rear occasions and jokes only when he's with us two and talks when Min and I are involved in something stupid that needs scolding from him but since he met Maya, there's always a goofy smile plastered on his stupid handsome face and she's always laughing about something he said. Dude's not even that funny!
I'm not jealous okay? I swear! I just...really hate Maya's gut.
I was only six years old when I met her and she was five at the time, she was wearing a pink jacket with a bunny hoodie while weaving at me with this incredibly cute smile that made my little heart flutter and so I couldn't help blurt the first thing that came to my mind.
''whatchá looking at snooty?'' From then on we became sworn enemies.
She has the ability to get under my skin even without trying, she hates my guts and I despise her confidence.
And as long as we're together in the same space, there's bound to be a lot of swearing and verbal fights.
Her name is Maya fucking Jones; my cousin. Well, we're not really related by blood or anything like that.
Her mom and mine were childhood friends, I said were because she's dead now. Maya's mom, that is. They did everything together as kids and even went to college together where my mom found the love of her life but her mother wasn't so lucky. Her husband left her and moved back to his home country Jamaica one year after they got married and the woman later found out that her husband remarried and started another family.
The woman was so torn and heartbroken that she couldn't even take care of her own child, so my mom took it upon herself to care for her goddaughter while her best friend's got back on her feet but she never bounced back after that.
Yikes!
Talk about tough luck, am I right?
Maya was only six years old when her mom died so my mom gained full custody as her legal guardian. It was also about the same time my dad started his political career and he wanted to relocate to Nigeria. However, mom had just been made partner by one of the biggest law firm in London so Maya came back to Nigeria with dad because mom said she needed a change of scenery; whatever that meant. I on the other hand was too much of a mama's boy who couldn't go a day without his mother to live with dad so yeah, I stayed in London.
Maya and I clicked instantly from the moment we met, not in the good kind of way though. Like a moth drawn to a flame we were always seeking each other out but it wasn't to play house or have tea parties and talk about crushes or toys. We were always playing pranks on each other and it drove mom crazy at times. I used to think mom kept me from visiting Nigeria all those years because of Maya, I won't even be surprised if she did.
''Smirk all you want snooty, I'm not in a mood for any of your petty games today'' I said after noticing a deranged smirk on Maya's face which indicates she's up to no good as usual.
"Oh, don't you worry your pretty little head pervert. I've got better things to do with my weekend then worry about your sorry ass'' She said maintaining her smirk as mom walked in smiling at the sight of us.
''Hello...my beautiful babies'' Yeah, so mom calls us all her babies even though I've told her times without numbers that I'm her only baby. What? Don't look at me like that, I don't like sharing.
''You kids should dropped by more often, the Villa is dull without you guys here'' She continued talking after prepping kisses on each of our faces as we all promised to come by more often (sighs) how do you avoid someone you see in school almost everyday and even on weekends when she's always at your family's Villa?
Maya moved out of the Villa into her own place after highschool just like the guys and I got our own place too when we came back to Nigeria a few months ago. It just felt right somehow. Now I could tell you the story of how these two fools left their own family in London and followed me across the world with the excuse that I couldn't live without them (pifts!) when in reality they are the ones who can't survive a day without me but I'm too lazy to do that, so... maybe another time yeah?
''Maya darling. I love the new look, you look...quite dashing'' Mom complimented Maya as her curly brunette hair seems to have been dyed to purple which doesn't really suit her personality if you ask me but okay, whatever!
''Thanks Mrs. D, Sasha gave me a make over'' Mom smiled warmly at her before saying.
''You're welcome sweetie and please you don't have to keep calling me Mrs. D. You can call me mom just like the boys or auntie if mom sounds too strange'' It will be strange having her call my mother mom indeed even if I'm the only one that thinks so.
I don't have anything against her calling my mother; mom or anything and frankly there's no reason why she shouldn't call her legal guardian mom. However, I just find it a bit awkward since they've been apart for so many years. I'm sure Maya feels the same way seeing how uncomfortable she looked when mom spoke. I've never seen Maya look so...uncertain before. (Sighs) I shouldn't interfere in their bonding process, I'm sure they'll figure out on their own.
