Mrs. Lindon pulls a file out of her bag then opens it before proceeding to read out loud what is written.
"On March 15th, 2015 around 2:50 am, an accident occurred on Forest Highway 19 in which a black car drove into the opposite lane and collided with a semi-trailer truck carrying lumber. The truck driver who called in the accident ended up with minor scrapes and bruises while his truck was dented significantly in the front from the collision. The driver of the car, Byron Darcy, was killed in the accident and his daughter, Millie Darcy, who did survive the accident due to being protected by her father ended up with moderate abrasions, bruising and a bleeding head injury. She was sent in a helicopter to the nearest hospital for immediate treatment." I hear Mrs. Lindon end her reading and I wait to hear if she has anything else to say. "That is the police report of the accident. Do you have anything to add to this report? Any questions?"
Opening my eyes; which I closed while listening to Mrs. Lindon's reading of the report, I turn my head to the right to see Ms. Dana is sitting in a chair beside my bed. My eyes land on Dr. Tharani next, he is leaning against the wall behind Ms. Dana with a focused look in his eyes.
Turning my head to the left I meet Mrs. Lindon's eyes as I respond to her question. "I do not think the driver of the car is my dad. I would need to see a picture to be sure. My name isn't Millie. I vaguely remember being in the car and being told I was being taken to meet someone. That is all I can remember about being in a car."
"You are doing so well, child. After you finish this interview, I'll bring you some dinner." Ms. Dana assured as she gave me a bright smile.
Since smiling with my lips hurts right now, I tried to convey my smile with my eyes. I think it worked since Ms. Dana's smile turned up a notch.
"Yes, you are doing well child. I will now tell you what we have learned since the accident and why I am here instead of your family." Mrs. Lindon explained the next stage of this interview and answered a question I had been wondering in the back of my mind.
'I wonder why I feel okay that my family isn't here. I'm not feeling sad that I don't remember much about them. In fact I feel happy. Am I crazy?' I ponder to myself as I feel conflicted about how I feel.
"Since the accident yesterday morning, we have confirmed that you were not related to the driver. After a blood test was performed we have now identified him as Pete Yates, a delivery man for one of those big box stores. We found this all out in our investigation when we attempted to contact any relatives to notify them of the accident." Mrs. Lindon paused here for a moment to take a sip from a cup she brought in with her.
"We discovered all the on hand forms of identification were fake and we have been trying to find out who you were since then." I'm listening intently when Mrs. Lindon pauses then reaches out to hold my hand. I glance down at our joined hands and start to feel weird about the contact. I look back up to see Mrs. Lindon looking at me with concerned eyes.
"Before finding out that you may be experiencing amnesia, I did not think this would be such a big issue. In light of this new fact, please know you are not alone in this situation." Taking a deep breath, Mrs. Lindon continues on in a soft voice.
"You don't appear to be in this country's medical or government databases. So that makes us believe that the passports we recovered were used to bring you into this country. The problem is we don't know from where you were brought in because the data trail has been erased. We don't know if you flew into Othya, drove across the border or even came on a boat. We were hoping you would be able to give us a direction to go in with any information you may remember."
'I see why she is showing concern. I'm alone with no family in a country I don't know with missing memories. I don't think I'm okay.' I acknowledge this calmly but that doesn't stop my anxiety this time.
I try to take a deep breath but my body isn't obeying me this time. The loud sounds the machines are making aren't helping either. I sense Mrs. Lindon letting go of my hand as Ms. Dana and Dr. Tharani start working on getting me breathing regularly again. It takes a few minutes and I'm not sure what they did but I'm slowly finding I can take deep breaths again.
"There you go child, just relax. It seems you have hit your limit for the day. I'll go get that dinner I promised you and you can just relax for the rest of the day, okay." Ms. Dana gives my hands a squeeze before she waddles out of my room.
Looking around, I see that Mrs. Lindon and Dr. Tharani have left the room. I turn on my right side so I'm facing away from the window. I try to snuggle into the warmth of the covers. I must have dozed off for a while because the next thing I know the bed is moving into a more comfortable position for sleeping.
I open an eye to see Dr. Tharani has returned. He gives me a gentle smile when he notices me looking at him.
"Rest, child. All is well. Dana left some snacks and water here on the table within reach. The medicine we have administered is helping you relax and will put you to sleep." Dr. Tharani says soothingly as he places a light hand on my head and it doesn't make me uncomfortable. "If you need anything press this blue button on the side of the bed and someone on call will come to help you. Good night and I wish you sweet dreams." Dr. Tharani gave my head one last pat before he dimmed the lights and left my room.
'He is a good man. I bet he is a good dad. I would love to have a dad like him.' This was my last thought before sleep completely claimed me.
