10 Chapter 10

Chapter 10: A sudden disturbance

Korra still can't get over the scene of Amon taking away the bending of someone permanently. From this horrifying scene she got nightmares, and even made her paranoid.

"Korra are you okay?" Tenzin asked.

"I-I'm fine, Tenzin" The airbender looked at Korra with a doubtful but sad look.

"Are you sure, Korra?"

"Yes, Tenzin, I'm fine" Korra forces herself to smile. Seeing this tenzin sighed.

"Okay, but if something is bothering you, you can just talk about it with me." Tenzin said then he walked away, he looked back at Korra and saw her still slumped.

Then from amidst the air a sudden voice came as if waking her up from her stupor.

"You are not totally alright." Recognizing who this voice belongs to, Korra muttered his name.

"Jiran,"

"Yes, Korra it's me, the magnificent and all powerful Jiran" The latter joke which made a stifle chuckle out of the Avatar, then he took a seat right next to her.

"What are you doing here?" Asked Korra.

"The same as you, did you forget that I also live and train here?"

A small 'ah' came out of Korra.

"So what's bothering you?"

"As I said nothing is bothering me." Korra said sternly but the latter could feel that there's more to it than what her words were conveying.

"Is it Amon? And the taking-away-the-bending-permanently thing?" Seeing Korra flinched a bit, Jiran knew he hit the right spot.

"I see… so it's him."

It makes sense, taking away someone's bending is really nightmare inducing especially for someone whose entire identity is built upon bending itself and the hundreds of reincarnations and the thousand of years behind it.

"Korra I wouldn't say that your fear is unfounded. In fact I can understand you, one can only dread at the thought that the thing that built them would be taken away by moment's notice by some madman." Jiran said seriously while looking at Korra's eyes which made the latter yelp in surprise.

Her cheeks started going red as she felt Jiran's gray eyes that match his hair bore into hers.

"But I wouldn't also say that you should avoid Amon either. You as the Avatar have the duty to maintain peace and balance in the world. It is your job to keep madmans like him in check." Once again struck by the truth Korra's red complexion disappeared, being replaced by a solemn look.

"Look. You don't run away from fear. You face it and crush it, trust me, coming from someone who once ran away from it, it's very dreadful." Jiran said then he stood up from his seat leaving Korra still looking at him with widened eyes.

"And besides. What's to fear about him? I fought that guy and he ran with his tail behind his legs. Didn't you see how I defeated him? He isn't that big of a deal you know compared to the Avatar, and if he did do something to you, don't worry I'll come running to your side" Leaving those uplifting words behind, Jiran walked away.

A sense of clarity washed over Korra, Jiran's profound words lifted her spirit up, she looked behind his disappearing back and felt truly grateful.

Jiran was always playful, sometimes he likes to argue and banter a lot, he doesn't even have manners most of the time, and there are also moments where he would become a completely different person. He always shows a different side of himself, this made Korra think that this airbender got more on his plate than she ever thought.

When Jiran becomes serious, be ready to get enlightened… whether good or bad, just depends on who's facing him.

"Jiran, I am proud of your progress in airbending, in just a week you have become a master of air." It was dinner and the entire family was gathered around a small lowered table.

There Tenzin, his wife, Pema and his three airbending children, Jinora, Ikki, and Meelo.

"I guess I'm a natural," Jiran laughed at Tenzin's words.

"No, I'm serious Jiran. You already completed the thirty six tier of airbending. If you show another great feat in airbending it wouldn't be long before you get your Airbending Master Tattoo" Tenzin said seriously.

"And get bald? Nah, thank you," Jiran countered. This made Tenzin fumed.

"This is the tradition of our people! You can't say no to this because you don't want to get bald! And besides, having a shaved head is cool! Look at mine and Avatar Aang's glorious head!" Tenzin outburst while simultaneously stroking his ego.

"Hehe! Daddy is bald!" Ikki mocked while laughing. Meelo also followed.

"Daddy bald! Ugly!"

"You're bald too Meelo." Tenzin sighed.

"But I'm a different kind of bald! I'm the handsome one while Daddy is the ugly one!"

"Sigh… yes son… you are the handsome one…" Tenzin just resigned in defeat. Korra, Jiran, and Jinora found this funny and started laughing while his wife Pema was fighting hard to stop her laughter.

"We are getting off topic. As I was saying, why don't you want to get your Airbending Master Tattoo, Jiran?"

"I just think it would be too early for me to get my tattoo, you know."

"That is indeed right, but that can't change the fact that you're extremely talented and deserve it."

Well you could believe that Jiran's reasoning was because it was too early but there's also another reason why.

Korra has yet to even summon a wisp of wind even though she has been practicing airbending for one week like he has, if he gets the tattoo then it would greatly hit Korra's confidence which he wouldn't want since Korra just barely recovered from her trauma from Amon.

But he can't say his reasoning right now since Korra is there at the table.

Tenzin probably knows this too but his judgment right now is being clouded since he's very excited, after all, Jiran is the only airbender outside his family, which remains a mystery to this date.

The family continued to converse, thankfully Tenzin decided to put the topic off to a later date since he noticed Korra being uncomfortable.

From then their conversation became more lighthearted and smooth until an intruder arrived.

"I'm not interrupting, am I?"
