Chapter 3: Earth King Bumo
The Earth King was in the same position as the Fire Lord. In fact they are like two sides of the same coin, he was also plunged at the throne at a young age like his counterpart.
His kingdom is divided by powerful dukes and his council is in disarray.
Earth King Bumo sat on his throne, barely able to conceal his frustration as his court devolved into another round of heated arguments.
His grand hall that used to be the symbol of the Earth Kingdom's strength and unity, now seemed more like a battleground where each noble was vying for power rather than working toward the prosperity of the nation.
"We should bolster our forces along the northern borders!" Duke Zhao shouted, his grizzled face twisted with impatience. "The Fire Nation may be silent for now, but they're always a threat! We can't trust them to remain passive!"
Another official, Minister Hao, shook his head emphatically. "Our priority must be our own lands. Resources are spread thin as it is! We don't have the luxury to prepare for a war that may never come."
Bumo closed his eyes briefly, pressing his fingers against his temple. This was supposed to be a council meeting to discuss strategies for improving trade, stabilizing the economy, and unifying the divided regions. Yet, as usual, the discussion had shifted to power struggles and personal agendas.
Just as Duke Yi began another tirade on land disputes, the heavy doors of the throne room opened. A messenger stepped inside, bowing deeply.
"Your Majesty," the messenger announced, "a letter has arrived from the Fire Nation. It bears the Fire Lord's seal."
A hush fell over the room, and all eyes turned to Bumo. He straightened in his throne, momentarily surprised. Communication from the Fire Lord himself was a rare event, especially in these tense times.
The murmurs that began to ripple through the room were filled with speculation, apprehension, and even a hint of excitement.
"Bring it here," Bumo ordered, extending his hand. The messenger approached, carefully presenting the letter. The seal was unmistakable—the blazing crest of the Fire Nation, stamped in wax. Bumo broke it open and began reading, his gaze intensifying with each line.
The nobles leaned forward in their seats, straining to catch any sign of what the letter contained. Bumo, however, kept his expression neutral until he finished, his mind turning over the implications of the Fire Lord's words.
After a moment, he looked up at his court and began reading aloud:
"To the Esteemed Earth King Bumo,
As the leader of the Fire Nation, I send you this letter in the spirit of diplomacy and mutual respect. Both of our lands face unique challenges, as well as shared responsibilities. Rather than allow the uncertainty between our nations to deepen, I propose a direct meeting between us to discuss peace, cooperation, and the stability of our realms.
Let us meet at Ember Pass, a place where the land of fire meets the soil of the earth. There, on neutral ground, we may speak openly, as rulers dedicated to the prosperity of our people.
I await your response and am hopeful for the path forward.
With respect,
Fire Lord Jinsung"
As Bumo finished, he lowered the letter, watching the reactions of his council. The room was tense, but it wasn't long before the nobles' voices erupted once more.
"A trap!" Duke Zhao scoffed, slamming his fist on the armrest of his seat. "The Fire Nation seeks only to lower our guard!"
Minister Hao, however, appeared more thoughtful. "If the Fire Lord wishes for diplomacy, perhaps we should hear him out. The clans within the Fire Nation are as divided as we are. They would gain nothing by risking open war."
Another voice, this one from an elderly advisor, spoke up. "Perhaps a meeting could buy us time. If the Fire Lord truly seeks cooperation, we may be able to leverage this for our benefit."
Bumo took it all in, absorbing the various perspectives while keeping his gaze on the letter. There was wisdom in listening to Jinsung, yet there was also a real danger. The Fire Nation was an ancient rival, and history was filled with tales of treachery between their peoples.
Finally, Bumo raised a hand, silencing the bickering nobles. "Enough," he said firmly. "I will respond to the Fire Lord's invitation."
A collective gasp filled the chamber, but Bumo continued, his tone resolute. "If Jinsung seeks a path to peace, I owe it to my people to pursue it. Too long have we lingered in suspicion and fear. If the Fire Lord is willing to negotiate, then I will meet him at Ember Pass."
The nobles exchanged uneasy glances, some clearly doubtful but others nodding in approval.
Duke Zhao rose, attempting one last protest. "Your Majesty, this could be a ruse to expose you. The Fire Nation has always—"
Bumo cut him off, his voice sharp. "And what will we gain by continuing this endless cycle of mistrust, Duke Zhao? If we do nothing, our kingdoms will remain fractured and vulnerable, ripe for any force that wishes to take advantage of our disunity."
He looked at each noble in turn, his expression unwavering. "I will meet Fire Lord Jinsung at Ember Pass. I will go as the Earth King, representing the strength and unity of this kingdom."
Turning to the messenger, he gave a brief nod. "Prepare my response. We will accept the Fire Lord's invitation."
The council members fell silent, and Bumo knew they would support his decision—if only because they had little choice. This was an opportunity, and he would seize it.
As the meeting concluded, he turned back to the throne, thoughts racing. He knew that this encounter could shape the future of the Earth Kingdom—and possibly even lead to an alliance that could benefit them both.
But he would not be naive; he would meet Fire Lord Jinsung with caution, prepared for whatever outcome awaited them.
