Chapter 54

"I've been thinking since we talked earlier," Norman began after you stashed the TM away, holding up the pokeball he recalled Vibrava into, "I'm a normal type specialist and May doesn't want anything to do with him."

"And?" you asked, raising your eyebrow.

"Well I could hold him until my youngest starts off but that's years from now and not really fair to Vibrava or him at all, with such a strong pokemon to hold his hand he'll never grow properly as a trainer," Norman explained, then he held out the pokeball, "I talked it over with Vibrava, and we decided that if you could put up a good fight, he'd go with you if you're up for it."

You couldn't help it, you gaped. "You're just going to give me such a rare pokemon?" you couldn't help but ask.

Norman laughed, shaking his head as he pressed his thumb to the pokeball and released his ownership of it, before handing it to you, "Vibrava aren't rare, you can find a Trapinch anywhere in Hoenn," he explained, "The problem is actually raising them up, that's why you hardly see anyone around with a Flygon, but I don't think you'll have that much trouble, will you?"

Well, you'd need to study up on the species line on your pokedex, but you're confident you'll be able to learn all you need to make it into a badass Flygon. Plus a Dragon and Ground type? Sign you the fuck up, it would be the ultimate electric type counter.

"I think I'll manage." you replied with a smirk, pressing your own thumb to the middle and ignoring the slight sting as it took in your dna and the pokeball was registered to your ownership.

Norman opened his mouth to say something, but before he could, you both heard a shout, "Dad! Cobalt!" you both turned around to find May running out of the roof forest area, a bunch of pokeballs clasped in her arms, "What's happening!? What was that shaking? Three of the pokemon like just jumped into my pokeballs because they got scared!"

"..Oops?" Normal laughed sheepishly, scratching the back of his head.

"Sorry honey," Norman laughed sheepishly as May approached, "Since you weren't going to take Vibrava, I decided to check and see if Cobalt here would make a good trainer for him."

"...And how did that cause the near earthquake?" May asked, then arched her brow and pointed at the devastation wrought by your short battle with the man, "Not to mention, that? I wasn't even in there for five minutes and the place looks like a war zone."

"We had a quick battle," you told her, smirking. When the brunette turned her attention to you, brow still arched you wiggled your newest pokemon's pokeball at her, "I won, and your dad decided I'd be a good enough replacement for you with this guy."

"Better you than me." May shrugged.

"Never mind that honey," Norman cut in, and you could practically hear the giddy excitement in her voice, "What pokemon did you grab while in there?"

"Oh, well.." May looked at the pokeballs in her grasp, "Kakuna and Sunkern were all too happy to come when I asked, Kakuna was a bit creepy, but from what my pokedex says, Beedrill can hit through steel easily so it'll be a big help later on right? if I end up getting stuck in a battle?"

Funnily enough, instead of seeking conciliation from her father, May turned to you when she asked that. Looking for guidance from you on her choice.

"A really good job considering you just decided to actually catch pokemon," you praised the girl, "Beedrill are fast and hit hard, they can't soak up a lot of hits without much training, but they learn harden or iron defense as Kakuna which helps out a lot. And Sunkern, you can evolve it whenever you want with a Sun Stone, and Sunflora get access to a ton of good attacks."

You raised a hand and gave the girl a thumb's up, "With Growlithe who you can evolve into an Arcanine with a fire stone at any time, it's a pretty solid team," you continued, "I was tempted to get a Beedrill myself, but I ended up catching a Scyther that was the boss off the Viridian Forest instead."

May blinked, and you could tell a lot of it went over her head, but nonetheless, she smiled beamingly at your praise, "My Kakuna actually knows Iron Defense!" she chirped back, then paused and seemed to think for a moment before continuing, "Oh, and a move called Electroweb, I think it's an electric type attack. I didn't know bugs got electric attacks."

"Woah," it was your turn to blink, "They usually don't. That must be one pretty impressive Kakuna you have there. With that, it'll be a menace to flying types, and it's an attack made to subdue and damage opponents, so it's great for catching pokemon that catch your eye too."

"Awesome job honey," Norman sidled into the conversation again, and you got the feeling he was feeling a bit left out as he grinned a bit shakily, "What about the third one?" he asked.

Oh yeah, she did catch a third didn't she.

"Like I said, one of the pokemon practically jumped into my pokeball when you two caused that ruckus," May rolled her eyes, "One of the Venonat in there ran away from me but ran back as soon as you two started shaking everything up, and I'd have felt bad if I left the little cutie behind when she was obviously so scared." as she said that, the brunette sent a pointed glare at both you and her father.

"...Sorry." you both apologized together in unison.

"I can't believe I have to scold my own dad for battling on the school roof." May shook her head.

Norman laughed sheepishly again, but you decided to press on and get the discussion back on track, "So Arcanine, Beedrill, Sunflora and Venomoth you're looking at eventually huh?" you mused, "Any thoughts on doing anything else like taking on the gyms for extra money or even taking part in Contest's, they're pretty big in Hoenn now right?"

They were actually something started in Sinnoh, and had only moved over to Hoenn in the lastdecade or so from what you know.

Norman's face drew up in distaste, "Contests?" he muttered before shaking his head, "I'd really she rather not." There was some bias there you noted easily, you wondered if you should ask why he apparently didn't like Contests.

From what you new, it was a pretty interesting career path. Combining pokemon abilities and attacks to show off the pokemon itself, and the combining attacks part could translate well into battles, heck you'd already done so with making a few combination attacks. Every trainer did nowadays.
