Darkness

The wind howls in my ear as I walk around, scared, and clueless. What happened? My mom and dad just left me here while we ran away from those bandits. My body feels like collapsing into the ground and crying forever, until the first dawn shows itself. Instead, I just stand there, paralyzed in fear of the woods and dark. I'm only seven years old, how could they do that to me? My feet start to move, slowly at first, then run through the endless darkness of the Everack Forest. The Everack forest is said to be one of the most dangerous places for someone to get lost on their own. It's a vast and seemingly endless forest with tall trees hovering high above your head. At least, that's what my father always told me. Now that I'm actually running through it on my own, it's a different feeling. My small body and tiny legs can only run so fast, and so much is happening at once. It's almost too painful to breathe in.

Pain, pain, pain.

Shelter. Shelter.

A storm begins to fester, and lightning crackles and booms on the horizon. Rain flows down the tree trunks and leaves, bullets of water pound on the top of my head. The cold, wet, muddy ground is horrible to run on and hinders my movements.

Shelter!!

I sigh in relief; there's a small opening in a cliff that's just big enough for a seven year old girl who just ran for fifteen minutes straight. Every time the thunder booms and shakes the cliff, it gets increasingly difficult to sleep. My brain and mind start to wander; why would my parents do such a thing? Why would they abandon their only child? We were just a happy family living on the outermost part of the elf kingdom, Polasia.

As the night goes on, the thunder and lightning gradually softens and quiets, and my mind finally drifts off to sleep. I dream of my mom's beautiful silky blonde hair wafting behind her, and her caring auburn eyes meet mine as she walks into the living room with a smile that only a mother has. My dad's bulky figure and sky-blue eyes follow her with a grin, his coarse, short brown hair sticking every which way.

"Mom, Dad...

...I miss you"
