A Job to take or not?

The sun shined radiantly, showering its light upon the surface. It was another warm day. Cries of laughter could be heard from the children of the town as they played with one another. The town was lively yet another day. The road path was filled with people, carriages, crates, and horses. And on both sides of the road stood thriving markets and stalls.

The women mostly bought valuable artifacts from vendors and the men worked mostly as guards, knights, blacksmiths, farmers, and storekeepers. The buildings were closely packed with each other, creating many alleyways. Closer down the town, one could see the difference in power as there were thriving markets where the rich stole their values and sorrowful slums where the poor and homeless roamed.

And as a defensive measure, the town was surrounded by walls with only one great where duty guards held their post. Even though it was called a town, it was nearly as big as a city. The name of this town was, Třekov.

It was Xavier's natural everyday environment. As he roamed the town, he heard a voice crying out for help. The voice was so sored you could barely even hear it." Help!"

It sounded like an old man. As Xavier drew closer to the source of the drama, he saw an old man arguing with the duty guards. The old man looked like the definition of pale. Even though he looked fine, he still looked like he could drop over and die any moment. The old man wore an unusual white coat and a pair of circular glasses. He was most likely a foreigner coming to Třekov for business reasons.

" Look, my nephews out there in that forest where monsters are active. Just where are your knights?" The old complained.

" As much as we'd like to help, almost all the knights left on a dangerous campaign two days ago, and we were entrusted with the honor of guarding the town's gates." The two knights then slammed their spears on the ground to show that they didn't have the time to waste on an old man.

One of the knights then saw Xavier." Oh, little Xavier?" he smiled and saluted to Xavier. It was a common thing for people to do whenever around Xavier. Since Feran was a holy knight, he gained a lot of fame all over the town.

" Seriously, you have the time to talk to a child but not me when there's an emergency!"

' What an arrogant person.' Xavier then sighed.

" He's the son of the greatest holy knight we have, and who are you the son of?" The knights ridiculed the old man.

The old man then walked up to Xavier and held his hands in a kneeling position." Please help me!" He begged.

" How would that benefit me?" Xavier looked at the man head to toe and found nothing valuable he wanted.

" Money, I have lots of money!" The old man smiled thinking it would persuade Xavier.

" Anything else?" Xavier became easily annoyed.

" A recommendation somewhere, I can provide you with that. My little brother can do that if you save his son!"

" Oh, will it make it to the Adventurers Guild?"

" Anywhere!"

" Job accepted, I'll leave right away." Xavier was easily apathetic by the whole thing.

As much as he wanted to help he thought about how would that benefit him. All he truly wanted was something worth his trouble. The old man smiled on the ground," Thank you so much, truly"

As Xavier entered the forest, he felt the presence of mana beasts. Because Feran was on a campaign there was no one clearing out the forest from monsters. Xavier rushed through the forest trying to pinpoint the boy's location. As Xavier grew closer, he saw the boy hiding behind a tree.

" There you are, now go along to your uncle."

" There are beasts around here, I couldn't possibly go alone, could I." The boy fidgeted in fear clasping his hands over his head.

" Fine, I'll go with you! But mana beasts are surrounding here."

Xavier drew his sword and threw it at the upcoming presence. He smirked," Go now, I have some monsters to kill. I'll be back by you in no time."

Xavier's sword had killed a devil bat. It was a human-size bat with a lower-body similar to that of a human. It harbored a strange demonic face and so that was why it was called a devil bat. " I guess others are coming here too."

Xavier plucked his sword out of the devil bat." That Feran," Xavier said, " shouldn't he at least cleared this forest first?"

A hexad of Devil bats came out of the darkness. One of them squeaked loudly as the others attacked. It was echolocation. Xavier dropped his sword and covered his ears. He couldn't move for he was stunned by the sound. It was enough to propel him to the ground. As they attacked, Xavier grabbed one of them by their heads then channeled enough mana to smash its head completely. And with magic, he made an ice dagger.

As two attacked him at once, he took up the body of the one he had just killed and used it as a shield. As they tore the flesh of their own, Xavier thrust his sword into one of their heads as he impaled the other with an earth spike without even looking. He then jumped to a tree," Three left, fine, I can take them all."

He jumped from tree to tree continuously, making it impossible for them to pinpoint his location. He then hastily slashed off one of their heads and returned to the darkness. Both bats then charged up and fired high pitch sound waves at the trees. " Who said I went back to the trees?" In an instant, he slashed both their heads with a single attack." Damn it, why do I feel weaker. If it was the time I fought Susan I could have ended this whole thing in an instant."

Having his body covered in blood, he said," What a boring job." As he looked upon their bodies. He then dashed back looking for the boy. He spotted the boy from before fighting an undead; he just held a stick in his hand and kept walking back. Xavier flickered and destroyed the undead skeleton's head with a gust of wind." The gates are right there." He pointed in the direction of the gates.

" What about you?" The boy looked upon Xavier with anxiety.

" Me? I'll finish my father's job. Tell your uncle to don't forget me."

The boy then ran away.

" Looks like I'll be home late tonight." Xavier exasperatedly sighed.
