Lucky Me

Currently, there were no available classes for Rin. This meant that he couldn't pursue a profession like a farmer, for example.

In order to gain access to different options, he needed to prove himself within the game first. The game's ranking system differed from Avalon Online's level system as well. It was based on ranks like Copper, Iron, Silver, Gold and so on.

Advancing to a higher rank would provide players with unique enhancements. However, to even reach the Copper rank, Rin needed to have a minimum of four attributes. He was missing one.

[Honestly, most humans are born with all their attributes dormant,] the NPC woman continued. [In some special cases—much like yours—we get to see an awakened attribute. For you, it's your Fortune or Luck as many call it. It enabled you to awaken the other two attributes.]

Rin didn't bother with whatever bullshit she was spouting and got to the main issue. "So how do I awaken another attribute?"

[I won't answer that question,] the lady said. [You have to find it on your own.]

"My bad," Rin said.

There's a lot of fun in finding all of it by himself. That reminded him: why was he deliberating over so many questions about class, origin marks and attributes? Wouldn't it be better for him to find it out in the game?

It definitely would be more exciting.

The NPC woman carried on with her explanation. [Rank is something related to your very being—your existence. The higher you go, the more divine you will become. Iron rank will cure all those mortal illnesses. Other than that, it will restructure your bones, make you look prettier and expand your lifespan to about two hundred years.]

"But all that in the game, though."

She lifted her head to give him a look, but didn't respond. Well, Rin wasn't looking for an answer.

[After we're done with the introduction, you'll be sent to play in the great game. If you fail—which is to die in the great game—you'll be resurrected, but your outworlder privileges will be revoked. You will be eliminated from the beta program. As for what happens to you after that, that isn't my concern.]

"Terrible policy, but alright," Rin remarked and gestured to her to carry on.

The lady started to introduce the basic power system to him. Rin listened to her carefully. The skills and abilities seemed to be about the same, though the way to implement them would be different. Rin would be able to understand them better after trying them out.

Other than learning a skill, players can integrate with certain substances—Skill Crystal—to gain skill. Origin mark was probably the most important commodity at this point. Supposedly on each rank, you could only fuse with one origin mark.

Other than the skill, there are abilities. Class gave abilities, but you could gain them from other exploits. Instead of levelling up by killing creatures, here one makes progress by absorbing gems provided after a monster dies.

Rin was most interested to know how that would work.

There were different kinds of gems for different attributes such as Physique, Mind, Spirit, Dexterity, Perception, Fortune, Charm etc. Health and Mana points were decided the same as the game: ten points higher for each point in Physique and Spirit, respectively.

All she mentioned was basic knowledge, and he understood it easily. She told him that none of the attributes was for nothing, and all stand for something.

Even Fortune, which appears to be the most useless thing, had its uses. Though it might not bring in a small advantage over anything.

[I cannot explain all of this in a few minutes. Not to mention, we have limited time here.] she transmitted to his head.

[Since you are allocated under me, I'll try to help you till the Game ends, along with thousands of other outworlders. So, expect no partiality from me. If you have enough Avalon credits, then it's otherwise. You can also ask me to be your personal assistant if you have enough credits, but that is a tale of another time.]

Rin nodded, understanding capital was the centre of all things.

[I have introduced the basic stuff to you. Now, let's end with the Lucky Draw.]

Light flashed before his eyes, twisting and turning into what appeared to be a wheel.

Rin knitted his brows, looking at the transparent image of a lucky draw wheel. There were dozens of small insignia on the wheel, from the familiar sword, ring, and potion to some unfamiliar and weird ones.

[You can get anything out of this, although most of the time it tends to be something you have or used on Avalon Online.]

"So a freebie, I like it."

Every player could draw the lucky draw once and get something super useful to a super useless thing, according to the woman.

Rin didn't have a preference, but he would like to have that one skill that enlisted him apart from all the pros. Of course, he wouldn't be going back to being a pro, but having that skill would be handy. Especially when there was no pain sensation optimisation.

[Spin and get it done with. You get only one chance.] The lady was becoming impatient with each moment. [If you don't remember, we only have a certain amount of time here. The more you waste time, the worse it will be for you.]

"I'm just making sure I use all my luck with this," Rin said, fidgeting with his fingers before the transparent wheel as if going through some weird ritual.

He had 67 points in fortune, so there was a high probability of him getting something useful out of this. Then again, he was unlucky to be two short of the luckiest number.

Rin clapped his palms twice and raised the index finger of his right arm to spin the illusionary wheel as hard as he could.

The wheel spun crazily, and his eyes never left the wheel, though he hoped for nothing big. Even if he had high points in Fortune, his luck was always on the crappier side.

'I have not been shat by birds more than a couple of times, so my luck can't be total shit. Then again, I've never won a lottery either.'

The wheel slowed down and was about to stop at the insignia of a sword, but it turned to where three question marks were displayed. Rin was about to curse, but his lips curved into a wide grin, reading the prize.

[Congratulations! You have won three more draws in the lucky draw.]

"Haha hahaha," Rin burst into laughter like an evil lunatic.

When he stopped from his celebratory laughter, he found the beautiful system lady staring at him, as if judging his mental age. There was some curiosity in her eyes as well.

[It will be a real shame if you get nothing worthwhile in the next few tries,] she commented.

Rin feared that as well. What if he had used all his fortune in that single draw, and he would get shit in the next three tries? Nevertheless, he hoped to get something useful in one of the three draws.

The algorithm could shit on him for all three times.

"Here goes everything," he muttered, spinning the wheel again.

The wheel spun for a dozen more seconds before stopping at the insignia of books. The wheel then showed a picture of a thick notebook or diary, before it turned into an actual notebook, and dropped on his palm.

[Congratulations! You have won Calvin's Notebook.]

Rin knitted his brows and so did the system lady. Without thinking much, Rin opened the book and the knit in his brows tightened.

"I can't read it," Rin said, rubbing the runic codes written on the notebook.

It was handwritten, and the writer had been a fine one. Rin turned page after page and found similar runic scripts until they stopped when he reached two-thirds of the notebook. It was all empty after that. It didn't appear like a magic book to him, but he was not a specialist in that, so he made the most appropriate decision, which was to look at the lady before him.

[It is written in Cantic, that is all I can say.] she stopped, though her sight lingered in the book for a little longer.

"So nothing but shit then," Rin muttered, trying to see if he could bring something out of her expression.

[Perhaps, perhaps not. Draw again.]

Rin grunted at her reply. She did not let out if it would be useful or not, and from the name and context inside, he reckoned it was useless for him currently. Thinking he had two more draws left, he spun the wheel again.

[Congratulations! You have won an 'Avalon Token'.]
