Side Chapter: The Beginning

Emma was a city girl who was currently walking her way across the brooklyn bridge in new york city. The cars at the side of the walking path on the bridge were bustling, and the tourists she passed every now and then were speaking various different languages. People were taking pictures and chatting excitedly taking in the beauty of new york. In fact, from the brooklyn bridge you could see the statue of liberty, in all her green shining beauty. She was basically the icon of the United states. Most people don't know this, but the statue of liberty was not always green. When it was built it was originally a copper gold color, since it was after all made out of copper. Only through the process of oxidation did the copper on the statue of liberty start turning from a copper gold, to a light dull green. Emma smirked to herself as she thought all these tourists were taking a picture of essentially a corroded giant statue.

Emma took out her phone to check on the daily news to see if anything had happened recently. Scrolling through the articles, she realized most of them were useless and didn't really count for news when all of a sudden, she realized something.

It was quiet. Impossibly quiet.

In a city like new york, You can't get "quiet". It's always noisy and its always busy so something like silence during a peak hour of the day in a place like new york is almost unfathomable.

She looked up from her phone. All the cars had stopped with people getting out of them, all the tourists stopped chattering as they stood in place and stared slack jaw and wide eye at the statue of liberty. It was brown. A copperish gold, as if brand new.

Emma looked down at her phone.

"Breaking news! The statue of liberty has changed colors instantaneously!"

And so began the phenomenon.
