As Kei watched in horror, an inhuman silhouette took shape in the form of a monstrous chameleon with four arms, two ending in sharp scythe like claws and the other two had sharp blades instead of arms. It stood upright on two beast like legs and was almost 3 meters tall. Its face was a appalling mix of a Cobra and a mantis with maws that revealed sharp fangs.
He had almost died from this creature that came out of nowhere, the amount of mana it was now oozing was way more than the beasts the party was fighting a hundred meters down the field
'A Monster?' Kei thought, but his thoughts were interrupted because he was on the ground and the monster was already readying its next strike, he had been spared just because of the black arrow which was stuck in the creatures face, if you can call that a face.
Kei was no match for the monster as he was still a dormant human and not realized how to augment himself with mana and his only weapon was already destroyed.
His only saving grace was that the instructor has already sensed the presence of the monster and was rushing to protect his student, and the archer who shot the arrows saving his flesh initially.
So, he only had to survive, but that was easier said that done he was far too slow to avoid the oncoming strike, he barely managed to survive by rolling and dodging a blow that could've instantly ended his life, he still received a nasty cut on his abdomen.
But the monster didn't back down, it launched a flurry of strikes and slashes as if determined to take Kei's life, it would've been successful in doing so if not for the instructor coming in to intercept the monster's advance.
In the meantime the arrow that was lodged into the monster disappeared and a similar arrow struck the monster again, as if the archer dismissed the arrow and shot it again, finally Kei had some breathing room so he checked for the direction the arrow came from, needless to say he was surprised to see the familiar beauty holding a bow.
It was Ayumi, she had somehow sensed the approaching danger and saved his skin, the bow she was holding was different from the ones they practice with in the academy, it was composite bow with a sleek modern look its surface shimmered with mysterious iridescence, it had a rich dark brown color and looked formidable suited for the best of warriors. The arrow was also hers.
'huh, rich kid'
The monster straggled back by the sudden appearance of the new foe, the instructor was in the initiate rank, so they were evenly matched. The monster sensed that it wasn't a favorable position for him and jumped back and started to go back invisible.
It had masked its presence once again. The instructed didn't know where he could attack from so he decided to put up a barrier surrounding him and the students, this was instructors ability he could conjure defensive barriers that looked like tinted glass. The barrier he put up was quite sizable considering he had to enclose all the students, and since he was just a initiate of B rank he couldn't hold it out for long.
Fortunately the party fighting across the field had already noticed the discrepancy in their spectators and the Sentinel was already rushing towards the students leaving the rest of the Initiates to deal with the remaining beasts.
There was countless strikes on the glass barrier and Kei could feel the barrier shudder, the monster clearly wanted blood, and the instructor was already reaching his limits, it seems that he had overestimated his abilities and conjured a barrier that he couldn't sustain.
Kei was observing all of this trying to determine the location of the monster or try a find a way to deal with the threat, Chrome was beside him now asking Kei if he was okay, Ayumi had her bow drawn, ready to attack the monster.
"Chrome do you have a weapon or something to deal with this guy"
Chrome shrugged "no, the only weapon I have is the academy practice wooden sword, I don't think it'll be able to do anything, besides how would you fight something you can't see"
That was a problem indeed this monster was the worst kind they could've ran into, it was intelligent and even possessed a insidious ability to turn invisible and mask its presence, but there was still ways of detecting the monster, for example it still engraved footprints on the ground.
So, Kei picked up a handful of dirt to try and lunge it at the monster to make it easier to detect and take away some of its advantage, they just had to hold on until the Sentinel arrived
As Kei was doing that the barrier shuddered and finally collapsed into countless pieces, the monster was free to attack them again, but now Kei was prepared he was watching the ground to catch the faintest change in the ground watching out for the creatures footsteps.
In the next moment he saw the depressions in the grass come crashing towards him, the creature was aiming for him again
'what the, does this guy has a problem with me?'
he hurled the dirt over in the general direction of the approaching footsteps hoping to catch the creature, which he did successfully, although not clear as day it was much easier to see the appalling monster, with a clearer view of his foe, dodging its oncoming strikes became a more manageable, allowing Kei to dodge the oncoming strikes of the monster with better precision and agility and not get cuts this time
