Last time

"Hey, Hey Curtis" said Maddie

"I'm calling you" said Maddie as she chased after Curtis as she saw him pass by.

"Curtis, I know you can hear me wait up" called Maddie as she ran after him.

Curtis sighed and slowed down because he knew that Maddie would cause a scene over here in front of everyone else, who were probably busy minding their own business.

"What is it?" he asked as he turned to meet her.

"Gosh Curtis, why did you ignore me?" asked Maddie as she was panting.

"Is that all you wanted to say?" asked Curtis

"No of course not" replied Maddie as Curtis began to walk away and she quickly chased after him again.

"Then what do you want?" asked Curtis

"Well I was bored and..." said Maddie

"And what?? why don't you go find Annie or Matt?" asked Curtis

"Well Annie is very serious, she's studying more spells, and I don't want to disturb her, and Matt, well I haven't seen him all day" said Maddie

"Well then I cannot help you" said Curtis

"Well you can, why don't we play snakes and ladders??" asked Maddie with a smile.

"Oh no, no way, not after what happened last time" replied Curtis quickly.

"Aww what, don't tell me that you still hold a grudge after last time??" asked Maddie

"Don't be such a sore loser Curtis" said Maddie

"Who are you calling a sore loser?" asked Curtis

"Far from it I am not a sore loser, I juts do not have the time and the energy to deal with a cheater right now" said Curtis

"What did you just say?? I am not a cheater Curtis" said Maddie

"I thought we already solved this, I didn't cheat, gosh get that into your thick paper filled skull" said Maddie as she was annoyed.

"What did you just say?" asked Curtis as he turned around to face her.

"Umm nothing" said Maddie as she instantly regretted what she just said, she was still bored and she needed someone to talk to.

"Okay wait, I'm sorry" said Maddie

"Okay let's just stop talking about last time, why don't we play a different game this time??" asked Maddie

"Hmm like what??" asked Curtis as he walked into the cafeteria and Maddie followed behind him.

"What about chess?? there is no way anyone can cheat at chess" said Maddie as she smiled as she knew that he was very close to agreeing to play with her.

"And how do you play this chess??" asked Curtis

"Oh well it's easy, you see it's like a kingdom, we have a king and a queen and some other pieces, and you can either choose to be the white kingdom or the black kingdom, oooh it may sound very complicated now, but it actually isn't when you actually start playing" said Maddie as she tried to convince Curtis to play with her.

"Okay then, I will play this Chess with you" said Curtis

"Oooh Yayyyyyyyy, okay so give me a moment to go get it, and you just sit down over here and wait for me" said Maddie as she was ecstatic, there was just something about playing board games with Curtis.

"Okay then" said Curtis as he sat down and Maddie literally ran to her tent.

"Oh Hi Annie" said Maddie as she entered their room.

"Oh Hi Maddie" said Annie as she looked up from the book that she was reading.

"Ummm what are you doing??" asked Annie as she saw Maddie rummaging in her suitcase.

"I am looking for my Chess game" replied Maddie as she was still looking.

"Maddie just how many board games did you bring with you?" asked Annie

"Umm as much as I need" replied Maddie

"And just how many do you need??" asked Annie

"Hmm about six or seven" replied Maddie

"Wow Maddie, gosh" said Annie as she laughed.

"Aha I found it" said Maddie as she held a chessboard in her hand.

"And can I please know why you are looking for your chess game all of a sudden??" asked Annie as she was laughing, Maddie could be so unpredictable at times.

"Well me and Curtis are going to play Chess" she said.

"Ahh I see, well goodluck with that, and also you two better not fight again" said Annie

"Yeah Yeah, we won't, anyway if you need us, we will be in the cafeteria, where I will be beating Curtis's book butt" said Maddie smugly.

"Haha okay" said Annie as she laughed.

"Byeee" said Maddie

"Bye" said Annie as she smiled.

...

"Aha, I'm back and I have the Chesss" said Maddie as she smiled and she placed the chessboard, and the chess pieces which were in two clear bags on the table.

"Okay and how do we play this game??" asked Curtis

"Well let me set the board first" said Maddie as she started setting the chessboard.

"Curtis how come you don't know how to place chess??" asked Maddie.

"Aren't you like very old or something" said Maddie

"Firstly I am not as old as you make it seem like" said Curtis

"And Secondly, I have never had time to play such games before" he said, the truth was that of course he did not know how to play all these human games, for one Annie was his first teenage human holder, and the way she was brought up was very different than the way the others were.

In truth he was also getting used to guarding a girl like Annie, she was one of a kind, not only did she befriend the daughter of her enemy, but she has also a hybrid friend, she was by far the most interesting Grey.

"Okay sheesh Curtis, I'm doneee" said Maddie as she sat down

"So which kingdom do you want to be? White or black?" asked Maddie

"Hmm black" said Curtis

"Haha okay black it is" said Maddie as she turned the chessboard with the black pieces to face Curtis.

"So since I'm white, I will move first" said Maddie

"These eight pieces in the front are called pawns, they are like little soldier, they can only move two blocks forward on their first move, and they can only kill pieces that are diagonal to them" said Maddie

"Alright I see" said Curtis as he observed the pieces

"Mhmmm" said Maddie

"And these two pieces over here are the castles, they can move anyway, as long as it's in a straight line" said Maddie

"And these pieces are the bishops, they can only move diagonally, and these little horsey things are knights, they only move in a L shape" said Maddie

"L shape?" asked Curtis

"Yes, like this" said Maddie as she moved the knight to show Curtis what she meant.

"I see" said Curtis

"Yes, and this is the queen, she can move anywhere, both in a straight line and diagonally" said Maddie

"Mhmm" said Curtis

"And now the last piece, the most important and also the most useless one" said Maddie

"The king, he can move in any direction, but only in one block, which is kind of stupid considering that the whole point of the game is to check the King, and the fact that he's the king, isn't he supposed to be the most powerful?? but anyway that's just what I think" said Maddie

"So do you know all the rules now?" asked Maddie

"Yes I do" replied Curtis

"Good, so there can either be two outcomes, either I or you win, and check our kings which is called a checkmate, or we can be in a stalemate, where it's a tie and we both can't do anything" said Maddie

"The games you humans come up with" said Curtis

"I know they are cool right??" asked Maddie as she laughed.

"Anyway I move first since I am white" said Maddie as she moved a pawn two blocks.

"Your turn" said Maddie, and Curtis moved his pawn two blocks too, as if mimicking her.

Maddie was not going to waste time, she immediately brought out her knight.

"Is that not cheating?" asked Curtis

"No it's not cheating, you are allowed to move your piece as long as there is nothing blocking it's way" said Maddie

"Okay then" said Curtis as he continued to move his pawn.

And in just three moves Maddie called out "Checkmate!! I win" she said smugly.

"How come??" asked Curtis in disbelief.

"Well as you can see, my knight is aiming for your King, and your King cannot move anywhere else" said Maddie as she pointed at the board.

"Haha this was very easy considering the fact that you are a beginner, and you could not see that coming" said Maddie.

"Well then a rematch" said Curtis

"Ooh okay and I will surely beat you again" said Maddie

"You wish, I learn from my mistakes" said Curtis

"Oh we'll see" said Maddie as she narrowed her eyes at Curtis.

Their match began slowly, with Maddie changing tactics, this time she did not move out her knight, instead she kept on moving out her pawns one by one.

Curtis copied Maddie's move from the last match and he brought out his left knight.

"What are you both doing??"
