Chapter 9

“I’ll look around,” I offered.

“I lost the original one…during the accident.”

Down on my knees at the couch cushions, I let my head fall against one before I lifted it and started pulling all three out. I felt like I should tell him.

“Molly asked me where it was a couple days later.” He joined me down on the floor. I wondered why. Though the apartment wasn’t huge, there were other places he could have been looking. “We went through the stuff the EMTs had put in a bag. It wasn’t there. Mols even called the local precinct and the emergency services people. No one had seen it. She gave me hers then.” Sawyer sat back on his heels after giving the nooks and crannies of my couch a good once over. “I kept it for a little while, but gave it back the day she headed off for…” He shot up. “I should check the truck.”

“Okay.”

“Will you come? Would you mind? You might miss the end of the movie.”

“It’s not like I haven’t seen it a hundred times.”
