Rose swallowed hard after hearing Christopher's words. It was as if they could not catch a break. At every turn, something or someone was out to get her. She could sense powerful feelings building inside her. Her eyes welled up with tears, becoming hot and blurring her vision. Rose struggled to hold back, but a muffled sob escaped her lips, and she clamped her hands over her mouth to muffle another that was about to spill out.
Christopher watched Rose's expression with apprehension. He was unsure if she was hurt or if the experience of the past few days had overwhelmed her. He suspected it was the latter.
"What's wrong with you? You feel very distant suddenly. Come here, let me look at you..."
Rose bowed her head to hide her face. She did not want him to see her like this. He might grow sick of her constant emotional outbursts and leave.
