"Put me down, I can walk ... myself," Alice whispered, an unnatural blush on her face from shame and embarrassment.
"No need." Lestat didn't stop in his tracks.
Why not! What kind of answer was that?
Alice's heart was beating like a drum and she was about to say something to persuade Lestat to put her down when she felt his arms tighten slightly around her and her body stopped with a jerk.
"Step aside and hide." He barked softly next to Alice's ear, setting her down and moving his body to meet a sudden onslaught of figures.
Alice was momentarily stunned in the face of this sudden development, but naturally obeyed and ducked aside, watching as Lestat battled the group of vampires.
With the girls rescued and Lily escaping, Alice thought they were safe, but to her surprise there would be another vampire attack.
Alice knew there was nothing she could do to help, and could only secretly pray that Lestat would defeat the other side.
