Chapter 63

“You must make a commitment within the next few days,” he told me. “These orchestras will announce next year’s series by the end of next month. If you want to get on their schedules, we have to sign very soon. If you don’t, someone else will.”

It was exciting but it was scary. Borden had said I’d have to offer each orchestra at least two concertos for them to choose from. Only the conductor would know what his or her orchestra could play. I’d have to memorize all of them. Soloists didn’t have music in front of them. That was another scary part. I was going nuts about it and I was driving everyone else crazy as well. I had many, many concerns about doing this tour.

I was driving Car up the wall. I kept asking what she thought I should do. I don’t think we’d had a conversation in the last week that didn’t start with, “Do you think I should…?” I knew it was irritating her.

That afternoon, I was still irresolute. I knew she was getting angry at all my questions.
