Chapter 51

“Send them over.”

Jay and I hurried to the costume tent. Mimi and three others were waiting for us.

I was put into my pirate costume, then was shuffled over to make-up. Jay came over to make-up, too. He was dressed similarly, but his clothes were about two shades darker.

Joel stood up on a stool. “All right, let’s check in. Lights?”

“Good to go.”

“Sound?”

“Just two little changes.” The sound techs walked up to Jay and me and placed tiny microphones on the backs of our instruments. At first I protested but the tech assured me it was not going to hurt the wood or the finish, that it would come right off and that it was necessary to get the full tone of the cello. When they walked back, the sound leader said, “Can I have a couple measures? Chris?”

I played the end of my part.

“Good! Jay?”

He played a few measures.

“That’s good, too,” the sound tech called. “Wait! Chris? Can you stop moving your left foot? There’s a mic right behind your heel.”
