A Surprise Visitor Part 1

Like yesterday, Carol and I spent our day reading fashion magazines, discussing our thoughts on different celebrities and their relationship statuses. A pretty basic day it was, but we had no idea that it was going to turn upside in a few hours with the arrival of an unexpected visitor out of nowhere.

The doorbell rang a couple of times before Carol lifted herself off the couch amid the jokes we were cracking about Dylan, which she was using as a tease for me. "Who would be at the door now?" she muttered. I shrugged in response. She opened the door to find an attractive, 30-something woman at the door with a broad smile.

"Hi, are you Megan Clarke?" she asked Carol, turned to look at me confused. "That would be me!" I stood up and walked to the door. I felt as though I have seen her, but I couldn't place where exactly did I see her though.

She looked at me from head to toe as though she was scanning me for missiles under my belt. I noticed that she looked very familiar; her brown skin, black hair, tall and lean figure was reminding me of Dylan for some reason. As if she was a female version of him, except her teeth, they were a bit more peculiar than him. His teeth were neatly set, in a straight row but hers were more protruding.

"Hey Megan, you're just like how Dylan described!" She said, marching in, almost throwing Carol off her path. She handed me the flowers and took me into a hug, almost breaking my jaw. The realization hits me like a truck; it was Dylan's sister. The picture he showed me last day flashed in my head, reminding me where I saw her. "So nice to meet you. Oops! I forgot to introduce myself! I am Kizzy Hill," she said, extending her right hand to me.

I shook it with the smile I could bring upon my face in the sudden chaos. "It's nice to meet you too, Kizzy. I am sorry, but Dylan didn't give any heads up that you would be visiting." I said, passing a look at Carol as she was also as confused as I was. "He didn't know himself. But he did tell us everything about you, so I couldn't wait to come and meet you."

"Everything means did he also tell you where she lives?" Carol asked. I eyed at her to keep her mouth shut. Kizzy laughed out, ignoring her snappy question, and turned to look at her, "you must be Megan's friend; what's your name again?" Carol was not enjoying this new company, and it was evident on her face. "I am Carol; I work as a journalist at NYC Breaking News." Kizzy extended her hand to her as well, which Carol took with a fabricated smile.

"So, how is your leg? We were so concerned when we heard about it. He said that I could talk to you on call, but he is my little brother; how could I not come to see that one girl who got him to commit finally!" Kizzy said, displaying her big smile, which resembled just like her brothers, and it made me a little swooned. I liked her instantly for some reason, but I didn't know what to expect yet.

We all got seated on the couch; Carol brought us some leftover wine that we had from the party night. "What do you do, Kizzy?" Carol asked her, and for some reason, I felt Carol was a little suspicious about her. She use to behave the exact way when we were at college, mostly to protect me from the girls who would get close to me to get something done. Kizzy sipped some wine from her glass and smiled at us as she said, "I am a registered nurse at the same hospital as Dylan's. The majority of our family are medical professionals."

Carol threw her fabricated smile at her, which meant she was calling her a bitch beneath the surface. I wonder, what might she would have seen that I didn't see yet. "Though, we are not as cool as Megan here. So, editor and future author, huh? What would you write about?" I smiled shyly, as I was quite flattered that Dylan talked about me in such detail to his family. But then I remembered, telling his family is the reason why we were doing this.

"Well, I haven't thought about it yet. I love reading mysteries and thrillers, so probably something like that." Kizzy noded with such understanding that I felt very understood and accepted. I felt good about myself, thinking I could win over his sister pretty easily. I couldn't wait to tell him.

"So, what did you study? Well, don't mind me asking, but my little brother is one of those most eligible bachelors in town. I am sure he would only choose the best." Kizzy said, and it hits me, all of sudden what Carol saw and what I didn't. "Umm... I majored in English Lit. That had been my passion always. And, yes, Dylan indeed is a good gentleman. Treats me so nicely." I thought it would act as a good defense mechanism to throw in some compliments for her brother instead of just talking about myself.

Carol was closely watching both of us, and her eyes narrowed every time Kizzy opened her mouth. I hoped that she wouldn't say anything to piss my fake boyfriend's condescending big sister off. "Of course, you must consider yourself lucky to win his affections. Well, we heard a lot about you but haven't you heard anything about us? Or were you not very interested, to get to know us?"

I narrowed my eyes at the way she directed her questions. Something did seem off as though she already suspects that we might not be a real couple. "Oh! No. No. I have been hearing about you all since the day we met. That you all are very close-knit, also that how close he is to his sister that hardly anything remains hidden from her." I said, trying to frame every word into a sentence that she would want to hear.

Kizzy lets out laughter indicating that she approved of every word that I said. I let out a sigh in relief and looked at Carol trying, to read what she would suggest doing to avert the impending danger. But with limited information, even she didn't know the seriousness of the situation. "So Dylan didn't know that you would come?" I asked, wading through my nervousness.

"No, silly! Don't tell him though I want to surprise him tonight." I looked at her, trying my best to smile from my heart, but all I could do was 'please don't kill us' smile. I looked at time, and it was just 15 minutes past 4, and there were many more hours to go till Dylan would be here. "I think I will take leave now; you two sisters should get to know each other till Dylan gets here," Carol said, breaking my heart into pieces. Let alone she was going to be here for so long was bad enough, and now I will have to be alone. I had no idea what I was getting into for sure.

Carol left in another 15 minutes. Kizzy and I sat down at the dining table, discussing her brother's accomplishments in the past few years. "I always wondered who he will end up with at the end. I thought that maybe he will never date anyone again. Considering what happened, you know." She said, looking at me expectantly.

I understood what she was indicating, but I hardly knew any details about anything that happened. "Yeah, it's sad! But I am glad he is healed and is better now." I said, hoping I didn't say anything stupid. She smiled in response and said, "yes, he is a lot better now! But granny is still scared for him. Well, it's normal for those who truly care about us to have concerns."

It didn't feel right to discuss this with one of his family members about one of the biggest problems of his life. "I am so glad you came to see me. It means a lot." I said, to create a diversion from his sad story progressing any further. "It is my pleasure. By the way, I came to ask you something personal. It is out of concern as his big sister. Do you really love him?"

I was taken aback a little. I didn't understand what exactly was her concern with that question. "Of course, I do! Who wouldn't? He takes care of me as I have never been taken care of in my entire life. He makes me feel so special. I have never been able to feel so sure about someone." I don't know why, but I felt good saying what my heart really felt out loud for once without being scared. Kizzy looked pretty impressed by my answer, I felt. At least having real feelings for him paid off here.

She kept on talking about his childhood stories, even showed me a picture when he was probably just a few months old where his mom held him closely planting a kiss on his baby cheek. I felt as though I was suddenly become a part of a beautiful family, unlike the family I was actually part of. Growing up as a single child, where my parents had a dysfunctional relationship always made me feel as though I never really had a family, or understood what a real family is until now.

Unlike what I thought spending time with her would feel, I enjoyed her company that we didn't realize that it was almost time for Dylan to be home. "He will surely be shocked as hell," Kizzy said excitedly, as she saw me checking the time a hundredth time. The doorbell rang announcing the arrival of the man we both were waiting for. Kizzy said she'll hide in the bedroom so she can give him a real shock, so I dallied, holding my breath, to the door.

I opened the door and saw Dylan, who looked flustered as though he ran straight from the hospital to here. "What happened?" I asked, concerned. "What happened? Where is she?" Dylan whispered, trying to keep his calm. "Oh! She is inside, hiding to surprise you. But how did you know?"

Dylan marched in just like how his sister did a few hours ago; I smiled at the similarities these two had, yet so different. "Carol told me! Where the hell is she?" he continued to whisper as his eyes searched for Kizzy desperately. I pointed into the bedroom. Kizzy jumps out of the bedroom, almost making both me and Dylan jump in fear.

"Hello, little brother! I found everything out!" Kizzy announced, making both me and Dylan look at each other in complete terror.
