1 Wishing Upon Stars

In the cacophony of the sleeping buildings, nestled together without an inch of space, with white breathes that cover the sky, and blanketed by dark coarse night, atop one such building, a father holds his son close and points to the sky. "Make a wish". The boy follows the direction of his father's finger and scrunches up his little face. "Papá, what are we looking at?". The dad pauses his revelry. He hiccups and gazes down at his son confusedly. "Why! A star of course!". Searching, the son gazes up again into every nook and cranny of the sky littered with the breath of the buildings. Dejectedly, he turns to his father. "Papá, I don't see it.". The father doesn't respond. His eyes sober and a trace of sadness briefly passes over them. Then he nods. "Mhmm. not anymore, but the stars are still there". He reassures ruffling his son's hair. " how do you know Papá?". The boy eagerly waits for his answer. " I am your father! of course I know!" the boy excitedly nods as if all is right with the world so long as a parent knows everything. Chuckling, the father places his son's hands together in front of his son. "out of all the stars, there is a special star that shines the brightest. She can make your wish come true". Holding his son's hands in place, he urges. "Go on. Make a wish. But be polite and show you really need this wish". the son nods once more but pauses, "Papá, why wish on the star when the moon is brighter? How does a star even listen?" The father raps his head. "ow" his son cries. "don't be rude to her. She listens." "ok," his son whimpers, "but how do you know the star is a she?". The father pats his head. " because that star is as caring as your mother". His son nods once more vigorously. "how do I ask the star for a wish Papá?". " just like I said," his father responds slurring his words. the son hesitates but then decides to continue, "um. Miss star? My name is Ea-". His father stops him, " what are you doing?". The son blinks and looks at his father questioningly, " wishing?". His father sighs. " wish in your head while looking up at the star. otherwise, your wish won't come true if you say it out loud". his son nods seeming to understand. Suddenly, a bang resounds throughout the roof. Father and Son quickly stand up and turn around. A woman in a long gray shirt and flip flops looks at them fiercely with her arms crossed making her look more intimidating. She beckons to the little boy. The little boy runs up to her. She hugs him protectively behind her back. She faces the father once again. Taking off one of her flip flops, she says sternly, " what are you doing?" while smacking him. He cowers pleading, "Mi amor! Mi vida!". She stops, putting down her sandal. Putting on her sandal, she sternly gazes at the father. Brushing her free hand over her damp frizzy hair, her honey eyes narrow. " you know he has school tomorrow. For Mavelron's sake, it's his first day of school!! what are you going to do if he's late?" The ending question sobers him up. "I'm sorry Honey". She sighs once more. "Come on let's go to sleep. We only have three hours before we go to work, and I have to drop off our little bee at Mother1003 before I head to work."
