When I first read this, the thing that instantly popped into my mind was [I really am a superstar]. I enjoyed it in the beginning as I didnβt really have much expectations, however, the story just got blander and blander. Pace is a little too fast for me, to be more specific, I personally feel that the MC is going through too much knowledge way too fast. And each one of the skills he gets is annoyingly bad or unserious. While it may be cool to speak to dogs, cook addicting food, read a personβs fate, in the end, I donβt really see the direction this story wants to go. Other than the overly stated βbecome the great master Linβ. I mean, what does the MC get out of it? In the beginning, he is poor and in business city ShangHai. But by by the time I read a few chapters in, itβs like he just wants to be lazy and not work, pushing it off on reasons such as βI donβt care about fame nor fortuneβ. The side characters other are 2D. Other than their intro chapters where we barely get to know them, they just become the cheerleaders, knowledge providers, or little brother collection pieces... Now for those who donβt like IRAS, Iβm not saying itβs the best novel in the world, but at least compared to Lin Fan, Zhang Ye actually has a goal! It may get side tracked or put aside for some faceslaping/romance, but the ultimate end goal is still to become a world famous celebrity (perhaps even the number one). One other point is that all the antagonists or βcannon fodderβ characters all had their IQs lowered to make the MC look smarter. An example: News report: Cloud street has 200% sales increase since MC moved in. Realtor A: letβs increase everyoneβs rental fees the second time this year by 100%! Thatβs a smart move, the shop owners definitely wonβt riot... MC + party: We resist! If you donβt take it back, we will leave this place! Realtor A + Company: let them move, itβs not like MC is the reason for the sales increase.... #please look at the news report!!! In the end, Iβm not saying people absolutely wonβt enjoy this, but I was most certainly unsatisfied with itβs presentation.
If you like "I'm Really a Superstar" (IRAS), then read this novel. Similar to IRAS, the MC in "A Valiant Life" has a system that allows him to gain new skills, and he relies on these skills to engage in frequent face-smacking. However, compared to IRAS, MC here does not have a strong motivation to be a celebrity- he simply wants to live a better life. In this sense, I sometimes prefer it to IRAS because there is less plagiarizing of well-known poems, stories and shows (or rather, the focus is not on plagiarizing). "A Valiant Life" is suitable for light reading at the end of the day when you want to relax and unwind, and don't want to care about dense texts, cliffhangers, cultivation or revenge-based plots.
Here is my version of a teaser/summary of this novel. Lin Fan is a struggling graduate in Shanghai til the day he got his hands on huge book filled with blank pages. Now he has got an almight encyclopedia in his head that allows him to make the most addictive heavenly scallion pancakes and the ultimate fortune telling skills but this is just a tip of the iceberg. Read on and accompany him as he struggles to get enough points to unveil chapters, meet new friends, smack some bragging belittling people's faces and raise to the top.
Itβs well written for the most part, but it still falls into the ever common trap of most modern setting Chinese novels; itβs racist, sexist, homophobic and transphobic. The premise is interesting at the beginning, but it just gets boring after a while, following the same plot line with small tweaks of *gain new knowledge* β> *come across wacky situations than can somehow be solved with it* β> *solve problem, but not without spending 10 chapters talking about how everyone underestimates him* and rinse and repeat. I read up to nearly chapter 500, and the quality just decreases. Even if all those things still donβt put you off, you still donβt need to read this, Iβm sure you can find some other face slapping system novel to read, god knows thereβs so f***ing many out there, some of which should probably be at least a bit less racist.
