A vagabond's ascent

Our protagonist is of the “vagabond” species. A pretty cool creature, but nothing compared to humans and their inventions. Humans can go eat my sawtooth branch. The world is constructed of floating island. Above and below is the “void” as all call it. Nobody has returned from the void yet, so they’re assumed dead. Are they really dead? Yeah, probably. Travel is hard - it requires flight, cause how else would you get between the floating islands? That means our protagonist’s species, the “vagabond” as I’ve established, can also fly.

The “Wandering Mirror”.

The "wandering mirror". The "drift lens". Some like to call it the "sky jelly"..

"All those titles, I can see where they're coming from. But there's one thing these names don't describe." Yeah. This thing needs a more.. grand title.

I'll call you the invisible island.

A couple vagabonds, unfortunate enough to run into the thing stopped dead and fell down into the thick white fog below. Well, they're dead.

The previously organized cone form of the pack quickly fell apart as the vagabonds scatter in all directions.

11 more dropped dead.

This creature refracts all the light in a way that makes it impossible to see from up close. It's not even carnivorous, but it's poisonous body kills more than a hundred humans ever could.

Even now, the only reason I can tell it's there is the dozens of corpses falling into the abyss for seemingly no reason, as well as diffusion of clouds thousands of meters in all around. There's no chance.

There's only one in the world. So why?

Why did it have to go in this direction?

The remaining vagabonds flew in the opposite direction. All hope is lost. The elder stopped flapping his wings. It's over.

I was meant to be the one sacrifice. Goddamnit.

We were a pretty good species. I liked existing, eating food, and thinking about socking the elder's and his son's face. But they died. And so did the rest. And now I'm gonna die as well.

One of the vagabonds desperately trying to get back to the islands snapped his arm flapping it too hard, which ended up with him slowly losing height while spinning in circles. It's a painful sight, really.

His body jerked, the blades shattering. The impact against the "drift lens" sent his dead body flying towards the island, spraying glowing blue liquid into the air. With a slap, the body landed in the muddy puddles below.

The mud started soaking up his blue blood, and took on the glow itself, almost looking like a living being.

"Aaaah.." I couldn't look at my pack-mate's corpse straight.

Shivering in fear, I crawled backwards from the cloud tearing beast getting ever so closer.

Is there anything I can do at this point? To at least prolong my death. I mean, I knew I was being left alone, but it never really clicked in my brain, that I'll *actually* just disappear. Fucking terrifying.

I desperately scanned my surroundings, trying to find anything I could use. If I had enough energy, perhaps I could boost my senses to attempt flight or do an even faster sprint, but I'll just exhaust my supply in a matter of seconds.

Trees? No, they take way too much time to consume. Grass is small and I'd have to suck up the individual leaves. Same with bushes.

Shit.

I felt lightheaded. Looks like using upgraded eyesight has already drained my energy supply.

I wish I could go all Jimmy Neutron mode and calculate the perfect solution right here, but it ain't happening. It sucks all the other vagabonds had to die as well.

"This poor dude got completely shattered to bits before dying, I bet that must've hurt. " I thought as I looked over what used to be a vagabond's body.

Now it's just gruesome puddle of blue, energy filled blood.

*thump* *thump*

As a terrible thought crossed my mind, my heart's pounding rung in my ears.

"I can't do that, can I? That'd just be inhumane.. Humane? Hah, that's not even funny. Humans are fucking murderers, that word has no right to mean "benevolence" or "compassion"." I calmed my thoughts.

Yeah, that's right. As a wise dude once said, "if you set your mind to it, you can fap to anything." Oh, wait, that's not it.

Point is, I can force myself through this shit. I closed my eyes and let my heart relax. I have to be calm to control by blades well, so panic is not an option. Tubes. I wanna use them for suction. No need to keep them half protective, just the normal needle shape will do.

Without giving myself time to think twice, I ran up to the fallen vagabond's body.

"Your death wasn't in vain my guy.." Saying that, I plunged the needles into his mangled body, focusing as hard as I could on speed.

The body juice made disgusting gurgling sounds as it travelled up my needles, becoming a part of my own energy. Several liters of the glowing stuff entered my body, giving me a fresh sip of life.

But I felt rotten.

"It's done." A shimmer of light came to my eyes, giving me plenty of energy to stand back up on my feet.

I bowed my head to him once more before turning around, steadily looking into the distance; the opposite direction of the impending disaster.

A lil grim eh? Leave your predictions on what our vagabond will do with the energy he took below (in the comments, I mean).
