A Fated Meeting (II)

I heard a faint voice coming from downtown, it sounds like a little girl calling for her parents. I hurried and went to find her, just when I turned right on the corner of the street I did. At the distance a tiny human silhouette was being chased by 2 monsters.

I tried to go faster, to reach her before they do, just a tittle more. In that instant another beast came out of nowhere and crushed her body. The 3 of them started to feed on the remains of that poor and innocent young kid.

Dammit! I want to kill them... however I calmed, took a deep breath and left. In the state that I'm right now is impossible to face all of them and finish unhurt.

I left the city as fast as I could and returned to my way. I want to erase that macabre scene from my mind, but I feel that it won't be so easy...

I kept travelling enduring the hot mornings and camping on the cold nights. I filled my bottles with water when I found a river and my bag with apples when I discovered a tree with those fruits.

I must maintain the resources that I can. I have to get to the end at any cost.

After that last experience I became more paranoid. I hide immediately after hearing some noise or see a shadow to avoid any possible ambush, I wait until everything calms before returning to my path. I began to evade the main route and walk on alternative routes. I know it would take more time, nevertheless I need to do what's necessary to keep me alive. If I'm seriously injured there won't be anyone to heal me and everything will have been in vain.

I can't afford to have a pointless fight, I must continue.

A few days later I step on something metallic without notice, it was a sign indicating the entrance of a town. Where? In every direction I see I can't find any traces of civilization. I followed a path and finally I can see the remains of a building in the distance. It's horrible, it looks like ruins from hundreds of years ago. Buildings on the floor, crumbled churches, destroyed houses and some pieces of human corpses. I turned around before the smell of the putrefaction gave me nausea and went back to the original route.

Maybe I should dedicate a prayer to them... no, I don't have time to lose with that, anyways I'm not a believer. I have a job to do.

I wonder when I started to be so cold? Maybe being alone it's starting to affect me more than I believe. Perhaps I was right after all, I don't deserve to be called a hero. I am just a coward.

It doesn't matter, nothing does.

For now my priority is to go there, I can't die before making it.

I would like to know how much time I have spent travelling. How many hours? How many days? How much until I arrive there? When did I leave my home? ... what was so important to make me abandon it in the first place?

My body continues on it's own while my mind wanders inside my thoughts, disconnected from reality. I only have left half a water bottle and an apple. Maybe I should have searched more in depth for supplies on the last city.

No! I must go on... but.

[Why did you keep going?]

I don't know. I just need to.

[What did you seek?]

Seek? I also wonder myself. What was it?

[Aren't you tired?]

Tired? Now that I think about it my feet burn, my throat is dry, no word comes out from my mouth no matter how hard I try.

[Shouldn't you get some rest?]

... yes. Perhaps I should rest for a bit... then I will continue with my journey...

Where? For what reason?

Those questions are floating in my head meanwhile everything fades...
