Once Maria and Mrs. Ellis left, the three sat to talk. “You know, Cody, if Maria adopts us, it has to be forever. You can’t decide later you don’t like having a sister. If that works for you, I’d like to press our luck and see if we can get one more ring made to match our three.”
Cody looked at Peter. “I understand, Dad. I really like Maria, but I also think she needs a cool family. You two are the coolest. We’ll be like fathers, brother, and sister. I told Maria you might let her decide how to fix up her room the way she wants. She might want it to be pink or something.”
The evening passed, the dog and boy got tucked into bed, and two bewildered men retreated to the living room to wonder when their lives spun out of control. There was an almost eight-year-old boy getting a five-year-old girl to adopt two gay men to be her fathers. Although they’d known each other for a few years, they were only intimate for a very short time.
