A Rare Precious Breed

“Listen dummy, I am so sorry,” I said “for pushing you away and making feel like I don’t appreciate you enough.” Without a word being said, Angela just turned and hugged me. Angela was mostly a hugger in emotional situations. “It’s okay,” she whispered in my ear “I love you dummy.”

Chapter 1

Precious's P.O.V

"Arg, I can't believe I'm going to college" I said "I wasn't ready to get out of high school."

My mom just glanced at me in silence, understanding that it was my first day in college. She did understand that it might be a little frustrating on my side as I also found it hard to deal with high school. I had to deal with bullying on my first day in primary school, not forgetting Christine and her gang who once humiliated me in the girl's bathroom back in middle school, and not to mention the older boys who used to eat my lunch box each and every day until I was done with my high school. My mom never knew anything about me being bullied in all each and every school I have been in.

"Mom, you are not going to say something."

"What do you want me to say?" mom asked "you've always loved school, what's the matter with college my love?"

I still couldn't believe that my mom thought that I loved school, a whole me who was always miserable about getting into class. She must've been blinded by the good grades I have been getting as learner. The honest fact is that I only went to school to impress my mom and it has always been my dad's dream to see me as a graduate one day. My dad was attacked by a wolf a year ago and died on the spot. People have been talking about werewolves, saying that they exist but I honestly think that werewolves are a myth.

"Nothing mom," I mumbled as I grabbed my bag.

"Come give me a hug," my mom opened her arms wide for me to hug her.

I went closer and she pulled then squeezed me with both her arms.

"You dad would be so proud of you right now," mom said as she gave me a kiss on my cheek.

I knew that my mom missed my day but she always acted strong at times like my father's absence means nothing to her. Sometimes late at night I can hear her sobbing in her room and I know that she is definitely crying because she misses dad.

"I know Ma, I'm getting late."

She released me from the hug and I walked out of the house and waved at our neighbor who was always outside early in the morning. Him and my dad would stand on the fence every morning, talking about the so-called imaginary werewolves, everyone around here seemed to believe in this werewolf story except me.

I passed our neighbor and two houses ahead I found my long-term friend, Angela waiting for me. Angela was my ride or die, we met the day were born, that's what our parents say. We grew up together and faced all the bullying together, we pretty much have faced almost everything together.

"You're late," Angela said.

"My mom was busy hugging me."

Angela laughed and I glanced at her trying to understand if I said anything funny.

"What?" I asked.

"You can't believe what my mom told me this morning." Angela replied.

I just knew deep down that she was about to mention that her mom told her about another werewolf story.

"My mom's werewolf stories," Angela said "this time she said one of her friends dated a werewolf."

We both chuckled as we walked to the bus stop going. These werewolf stories ended up being in everybody's head in the neighborhood. The buss to the city arrived and we got on to it, the women sitting behind us were having a conversation. Angela had the tendency of eavesdropping when she heard old people having a conversation, she said that she found their conversations funny. I glanced at her and shook my head, she pulled me by my jersey.

"What?" I asked as yanked my shoulder for her to leave me.

"Listen," she replied.

I decided to swallow my pride and put my eavesdrop as she was doing.

"These werewolves ate all of my dogs last night," one of the women said "they broke the treaty which was made 20 years ago."

"But how can we negotiate with animals such as this?" another woman asked "they are not human; they don't understand what it means to remain loyal."

A man sitting behind them decided to join the conversation.

"What these things are doing to us is not fair," he said "we must find a way to put an end to this."

Voices started raising in the buss about these werewolves, Angela and I exchanged looks hoping that these people realized that they were actually out of their minds. There might've been something eating their chickens and dogs but werewolves only existed in movies like "the twilight saga." At this point we were no longer eavesdropping but we were just sitting there in silence listening to everyone complain about creatures that didn't even exist.

We finally arrived at the city and we got off the bus and headed to the campus which wasn't that far from the bus stop.

"Where do these old people take these stories?" I asked.

"We are only 20 years old" Angela replied "maybe the people who were born before us had a similar disability"

I giggled "you're right."

"Of course, I am," Angela replied.

"So, what happened to your high school boyfriend."

Angela's facial expression changed because the high school was her very first heartbreak.

"You do know how to kill a vide when you want to." she replied.

"I was just asking." I said "I mean the guy is a jerk anyway."

"See you after class Precious," Angela said as she was heading a different direction.

"Where are you going?" I asked.

Without saying a word Angela just waved her hand and walked away. I just shook my head and watched her walk away from me, that was simply because I mentioned her ex-boyfriend. As I turned trying to go and look for my class, I collided with someone and my cellphone fell down.

"Oh, I'm so so…"

I couldn't finish my sentence because I was mesmerized by this handsome guy who was trying to help me reach for my phone down there. I got caught in the moment staring at this wonderfully made young man who just fell right in front of me like he was sent for that moment and that moment only.

"Are you okay?" he said.

"What?" I said "Oh yeah, I'm sorry for that."

He picked my phone up from the ground and handed it to me.

"It's okay," he replied.

I grabbed the phone and out of being nervous I didn't know what to say back to him so I just walked past him. At awkward moments such as this one only Angela knew how to handle them and I was such a 20 year's old virgin who repeated grades not because of failed but because my mom always said I should only go to the next grade only of my percentages were above 80%, so she would make me repeat a grade because I got 60% in some subjects.

As I was walking away glancing at the boy, he was still right there staring at me and I just rushed to the lecture hall and I was the first one to arrive there. As I was sitting there looking around waiting for everyone to arrive, I realized that college was way too different from high school. I thought that I was going to be welcomed by a cloud of bullies but not this time, I liked it so far.

As I was sitting there, people started walking in the lecture hall one by one, I just stared at the door and thinking that maybe there might be someone I knew from high school and there was none. As I was watching people that were walking through the door into the lecture room, the same handsome boy I met earlier walked into the lecture room.
