I attempted to swallow the yawn that escaped my mouth. As I leaned against the cool outside of the custard-colored wall, it fell out anyhow. I looked up at the ceiling and blinked. Sleeping in the hospital suite was difficult because there was just enough bedding for two people. And how could I sleep well while a significant occasion was approaching?
Smith had been restless as well. The wind whipped across the window, reminding me of my mistake in the Florida Keys two days before. I'd been selfish, but wallowing in guilt was even worse.
The bed made a noise. I jerked and awoke to find my mother-in-law awake. "Mrs. Mason."
Smith shifted alongside me and jumped to his feet. He put his hand on her shoulder. "Mom."
She moaned as she attempted to stand up.
As he pressed into her midsection, his eyes widened. "Don't move."
All eyes were focused on the mother and son.
