“Gentlemen, ladies, I think the tension is getting to all of us,” Lex said. “I suggest we get some rest, if we can. There’s nothing we can do until we know that Geoffrey’s back and ensconced in his caverns.”

Mattie nodded. “But we should all stay here, if it’s all right with you. It’s safer that way.”

“I was going to suggest that,” Lex replied. “Come, I’ll show you to your rooms.”

The six guest bedrooms were along one side of the long central hallway on the second floor of the mansion. Dirk, because he was Lex’s son, had one of the larger rooms across from them, as did Lex. At Nina’s suggestion, Alice and the three other women would share the room on the other side of Lex’s.

“It’s large enough,” she said, “and I have the feeling they’ll be much happier, and feel safer, it they’re all together.”
