Chapter 28 WHAT IF SHE GETS ANGRY?

John frowned. He was shocked again by the question thrown by Mary Ann. Though, he already has an idea what the woman means.

"Does it really matter, Babe? I mean. I love you and I don't care about it. I think right now what we feel for each other."

Mary Ann is teary-eyed. She couldn't believe what she heard from John.

The man really loves her. He accepted her past and her whole being.

She feels the tears slowly fall down from her eyes. She couldn't help it anymore.

All this time, all the fear and holding off herself was a waste of time for the two of them.

John showed her how much he loves her. She is lucky to find him.

"Sshh… Stop crying. " John pulled her to his chest and her head rested there. "Babe, listen to me.This time, I won't allow anyone to harm you. I am here to be your shield, to protect you and I want you to know that I will do everything to keep my promise of being responsible for you. I am sorry if I came late in your life and I wasn't there during the times you needed me the most." He whispered. John finally said all the words he wanted to say to the woman who trusted her without any hesitation that night five years ago. And now, the woman he loves to whom he wanted to spend the rest of his life.

Mary Ann lifted her head and as expected she looked confused. Her eyebrows are almost meeting each other. Her forehead wrinkled.

She looked at him intently. "What do you know about me? Why are you talking to me like that?"

John looked at her directly to her eyes and without blinking,"Babe, I know everything. I know every detail that happened that night. I am here now and I am so sorry that I wasn't there for you. I was late and I wasn't able to save our daughter." John has misty eyes. He continued as his voice was already breaking,"I---I'm sorry that I wasn't able to come the very next day after that night you saved me. I am sorry you were left behind. I didn't mean to leave you alone."

Mary Ann eyes went round. She was dumbfounded from what she had heard from John. She cried and she must admit that she wanted to feel angry at him. "You were that man?" She asked for confirmation. She has all the right to hate him but she is trying to think rationally. She has to listen to his explanation. Everybody deserves to explain their side. Something that was not given to her that caused the life of her baby.

John must have his reasons why he left that night and didn't show up to her. She could see in his face that he blames himself for what happened to their daughter.

John nodded, "Yes, babe. I am sorry." John could feel his eyes watering and in a second, tears started to drip from his eyes. "Mom called me the next morning after something happened to us. I needed to rush home because she is going to divorce my father and my little sister will be badly hurt. I wanted to stop it so I packed my things. But, believe me. The night prior to the day, I already decided to ask for help from Arnel and Marla." He said with so much sadness in his face.

Mary Ann could see how much John regretted leaving her after the night that something happened to them. She could see that the man felt really sorry for leaving her behind a couple of years ago. One thing she is sure of, she never regretted the day she had baby Annie in her life. Yes, she felt disappointed with John but this anger wouldn't be able to change the past.

Past is something they could look back on every now and then but not something they should live on.

The good thing is the universe and destiny work together to get her path and John's path cross again.

Maybe, their love started in an unpleasant way but John is back to fulfill his promise five years ago. To take accountability for her and be responsible for her.

"That's okay. That is our past and right now, what we need to think about is our present and our future." She said with tears in her eyes. If she dwells in the past, then she will miss the chance to be happy with the man she loves.

John hugged her tightly and kissed her in the forehead. "Babe, I love you more than you can imagine. Upon hearing what you said, I know my heart isn't mistaken to fall in love with you. A beautiful and kind woman who can think rationally despite the hurt and pain she needed to go through in life. I am such a very lucky person to have you in my life and to be loved by someone like you."

They were in that position for a couple of minutes. Feeling each other and only the beat of their hearts can be heard.

"Let's go and talk to Grandma, we need to get married as soon as possible." He said while patting her back.

Mary Ann slightly pushed John and she raised her head."Hey, we just started our relationship, and you are already thinking about marriage." She chuckled.

John was stunned. His eyebrows narrowed. "Why? Don't you want to get married?"

Mary Ann smiled," Silly, don't get me wrong, okay? It isn't that I don't want to get married. That's every woman's dream. I just want to enjoy our relationship first as girlfriend and boyfriend." She shyly looked at him,"It's my first time to have a boyfriend so I want to enjoy every moment. I never had a chance for it when I was younger." She pouted her lips.

John nodded, "I understood. I am sorry for being so selfish. I decided and thought about what I wanted. It's okay if that's what you want and I will respect that. Just promise me that you won't fall in love with anyone except for me, okay?"

Mary Ann was still inside John's arms.

John was playing with the strands of her hair, "Babe, are you not hungry? Do you want me to cook for you?"

"Yes , please. I am already hungry." She answered.

"Alright, what do you want to eat? Just tell me and I will cook it for you."

"By the way, what time is it?" Mary Ann asked. She suddenly remembered her grandmother.

John checks the time on the alarm clock at the top of the bedside table, "It's almost eight. Why?

"For sure grandma is already worried about me. I don't go home late without letting them know the reason."She's starting to get nervous, "What will I tell her?

"Don't worry I will call her."

"No, Grandma might be surprised why I am still with you this late."

"Don't worry. I will handle this."

"What will you tell her?"

" I will tell her that you are with me and you will sleep here tonight." He answered with confidence.

"What?! Are you serious?" She was shocked by John's response. The man must have gone crazy. Her grandmother might really think she can be get easily by guys.

"Yes, I am serious. I will tell her that you are with me and that you will be spending the rest of the night with me. We will just go early to your house tomorrow." Mary Ann is still confused. Why John isn't even nervous? "Don't worry, Babe. Grandma will not be mad at you."

Last time, when he picked up Mary Ann to attend Adrian's banquet, he had already talked to her grandmother. Without exerting too much effort and being too obvious about his real reason, he was able to get the answers he needed to know.

He started by asking his grandmother about the baby in the photo at Mary Ann's room that he saw when he slept at their house the first he dropped Mary Ann off. He pretends that he is curious who the baby is because the baby is not around the house.

They told him everything about Mary Ann, as in everything that he needed to know.

Her grandmother wants John to know earlier about her past so if ever they both fall in love, it wouldn't be hard for Mary Ann to open up.

The old lady already knew who he was and what his role was in Mary Ann's life.

"Give me your phone, I will talk to Grandma." Mary Ann was hesitant to give her phone. She doesn't know what to think of and she doesn't want to put her grandmother in shock.

"What if she gets angry?" Mary Ann asked John again before giving her phone.
