A Dull Gray To A Vibrant White

Nathan James is an unfortunate man. Born mediocre in an extravagant world, crippled in an accident, he finds himself at his wits end. An unending gray, tinged with the lightest bit of blue. Now, Nathan finds himself in different world with a will to blaze a path of his own. The sole man destined to… wait, he’s not got a special destiny? * * * Currently on hiatus because I was writing a lot at once. Will resume eventually, between a day to a week.

What am I supposed to be doing?

Now it's been a few days since the time travel trip or whatever that was, a few days since the fishing trip where I got bit by a lizard.

Sitting in class, I find my eyes drifting to the window for a while. I've started sitting in the corner since the trip to the past, distancing myself yet again. Maybe there's a reason I never had friends in my past life, honestly...

I turn my meandering gaze to the few people I can call friends in the front row... I'm pushing them away. That's a really bad habit... but then again, so is smoking and I used to do that a bunch when I was young. Does that make pushing people away okay? Nah, just means I'm a self aware hypocrite, which is arguably worse.

I look out the window once again, gazing upon the evening clouds. Apparently we're taking a midterm this month, although that's hardly the main thing happening soon. There's been rumors around Cleras from person to person, that Istantetzia was preparing for a war. The thought concerns me more than I'd be willing to admit.

There's been an influx in transfer students to Lumin, more people in general to be honest. I haven't seen any new people who give me the weird feeling, but there's probably some talented ones among them.

More students also means more magic related injuries, more potential soldiers, more bodies that can fall on the battlefield.

The most common injury is probably overuse, the simple act of using too much mana.

Mana is stored within the body like a chamber or a pot, keeping it within yourself and using it when called. Of course, ones body can only store and take in so much mana at once, so if you withdraw too much... your body starts eating itself, essentially.

For me, it appeared as if I had burst into flames, but in reality I was simply emitting fire as the cells of my skin, fat and muscles converted themselves into nothing. Of course, I did end up losing control of the fire and genuinely burning myself, but that was mainly because I passed out.

Fun fact, certain people are predisposed to having higher or lower internal reserves. I think my mana reserves are high, but I can't quite remember and I haven't taken the time to compare myself to someone else.

What I don't know is how one person can only use one element. I feel like it's something that I should obviously know, but I don't because I'm not native. I'm just assuming the teacher will eventually talk about it.

I think the most interesting thing I've learned so far was differentiating patterns within myself. The only thing I can do with it is the phantom slash that the old man taught me, but I'm completely sure there's more applications of the technique.

I don't want to ask sword grampa because he'll probably be an ass about it, as per usual.

I turn back to the front of the class, at the teacher wearing a dress and a pointy hat. She's probably talking about hexes or spells or some lame other thing, although it's probably quite useful in reality. I think it's bizarre how I write off some valuable offensive options simply because they sound lame...

It's a really short chapter today since I was at Scarborough fair today and hurt my hand, sorry. Also, I was gonna write a chapter every two days, but it's just inconsistent enough to where I can't establish it as a habit. I will go back to writing a chapter a day starting tomorrow, although they will stay short until my hand feels better. Once again, I'M SO SORRY FOR BEING A BAD AUTHOR! THESE CHAPTERS WERE ENTIRELY FILLER AND WORLD BUILDING!
